Neo-liberalism requires democracy. It does not function well in countries like Venezuela, which are anti-Democratic in the extreme. You may argue that China is anti-Democratic, but they are undergoing a liberal revolution. Fairly soon, the newly generated middle class in China is going to demand a political voice, just as in the 19th century, the newly generated middle class in Europe demanded a political voice.
Neoliberalism was first mobilized in Chile under Pinochet.

It was implemented by Deng Xiaoping.

Remember that the Reagan Revolution (neoliberalism...) was made possible in part by the disenfranchisement and mass incarceration of many, starting with Nixon. That ain't democratic.

Finally, neoliberalism isn't a thing in Venezuela. Chavez-ism is nothing but a nationalistic response to neoliberalism.

Neoliberalism is an economic policy. It doesn't have much to do with liberal cultural or social values. It's an economic and political project.

Guardian (left wing enough source?):

Left or right wing is not a criteria by which to judge a newspaper, it's credibility is. And the credibility of the source making the claims.

Yes, it is the Czech intelligence officer and his organisation which is making the allegation. Of course, these days, we can all just yell 'fake news' and it all goes away; well, unless you are a bumbling Russian or Saudi execution squad.

Currently under Parliamentary investigation for failing to declare it. It must be very hard for you to see through that fog. He was paid for visits, broadcasts etc. He will toady up to any anti-western despotic thug. Enjoy your love-fest about the sick little man.

Well, not exactly. It is a complex term with a complex history.
It was implemented by Deng Xiaoping.
Sort of, but in fact China's economy is mercantilist.
Remember that the Reagan Revolution (neoliberalism...) was made possible in part by the disenfranchisement and mass incarceration of many, starting with Nixon. That ain't democratic.
This is an unsupportable claim.

Finally, neoliberalism isn't a thing in Venezuela. Chavez-ism is nothing but a nationalistic response to neoliberalism.
Which by definition makes it a "thing" in Venezuela.

Yes, it has every thing to do with culture and social values. This is more what I have in mind:

Thread reopened for discussion. Let's be civil. As Buddhists we must strive for Right Speech. Please keep in mind Monlam's words going forward:

"Below are excerpts from our policy on Right Speech and enlightened discussion. It's useful to keep in mind generally, but especially when discussing topics such as these".

The Buddha was precise in his description of Right Speech. He defined it as “abstinence from false speech, abstinence from malicious speech, abstinence from harsh speech, and abstinence from idle chatter.” In the vernacular this means not lying, not using speech in ways that create discord among people, not using swear words or a cynical, hostile or raised tone of voice, and not engaging in gossip. Re-framed in the positive, these guidelines urge us to say only what is true, to speak in ways that promote harmony among people, to use a tone of voice that is pleasing, kind, and gentle, and to speak mindfully in order that our speech is useful and purposeful.

Right Speech is a mindfulness practice. By undertaking this practice, we commit to greater awareness of our body, mind, and emotions. Mindfulness makes it possible to recognize what we are about to say before we say it, and thus offers us the freedom to choose when to speak, what to say, and how to say it. With mindfulness, we see that the heart is the ground from which our speech grows. We learn to restrain our speech in moments of anger, hostility, or confusion, and over time, to train the heart to more frequently incline towards wholesome states such as love, kindness and empathy. From these heart states Right Speech naturally arises. ~from the article "Right Speech Reconsidered" by Beth Roth
In an enlightened discussion, it is never acceptable to comment on your discussion partner in anything other than glowing, admiring terms, no matter what he says, whether or not he insults you, belittles you, swears at you, curses your lineage and guru, or consigns you and all your progeny for seventy generations to the lowest tiers of the nastiest hells. It's just not allowed in civil conversation. ~catmoon
These internet forums are actually quite good places to train in patience, wisdom and openness. ~JKhedrup

Left or right wing is not a criteria by which to judge a newspaper, it's credibility is. And the credibility of the source making the claims.
That to me is an important point, credibility over viewpoint. One that affects this thread.

One of the problems in the U.S. is that our mainstream media has become polarized in a way it's not been since before the television age began. People don't have a lot of practical experience evaluating credibility of reporting and sources. And for many if they see it in print (paper or screen) that is enough to confer legitimacy.

I hope the awakening of so many young people here also awakens more critical thinking. It is much needed.
"Knowledge is as infinite as the stars in the sky;
There is no end to all the subjects one could study.
It is better to grasp straight away their very essence--
The unchanging fortress of the Dharmakaya."
