Blue "ripple"

Post by DNS » Wed Nov 07, 2018 4:56 am

The first openly gay person elected governor of a U.S. state in Colorado.

https://www.cnn.com/2018/11/06/politics ... index.html

Counting still going on as I write this, however, overall it appears it is not going to be a Blue wave, nor a Red wave; perhaps a Blue "ripple" at best.

It appears the Dems will re-take control of the House, but not the Senate.

Losing seats in the Senate.

Dems still don't have an alpha narrative. Just PTA wholesomeness.

A female Native American martial arts expert was elected democrat house rep, as well. Butterfly effect anyone?

The senate was lost from the outset given the combination of seats up this time, but the house seems to be going ok, as are the gubernatorial elections

Now says ...
This Live Blog Is Taking A Nap

The big questions have been answered. Democrats have taken the House. Republicans will keep the Senate. Exactly how many seats will change hands, however, is still up in the air:

There are currently just over 30 House seats yet to be projected; if the current leader in all of them ends up winning, the House will be 227 Democrats, 208 Republicans.
In the Senate, three races remain outstanding (not including Florida, where Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson has conceded). In Montana, Democratic Sen. Jon Tester is fighting for his political life, trailing Republican Matt Rosendale by about 1 point. In Arizona, Republican Rep. Martha McSally has a 1-point lead — 49 percent to 48 percent — over Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema. Hundreds of thousands of votes remain to be counted, so it could go either way. In Nevada, Republican Sen. Dean Heller trails Democratic Rep. Jacky Rosen by 7 points. (And, in fact, the race has been called for her by some networks,)
The unresolved gubernatorial races are in Wisconsin, where it seems like Democrat Tony Evers will just eke out a win; Georgia, where Republican Brian Kemp is up by a few points but only just above the threshold to avoid a runoff; Connecticut, where Democrat Ned Lamont is trailing; and Alaska and Nevada, where only about a fifth of the vote has been counted so far.
So we’re going to get a few hours of sleep, and — being completists — we’ll close this out sometime Wednesday with the final numbers.
Kim

Not as good a night for Dems as hoped. Still not a good day for Reps.

Some check on Trump but more of the same division going forward.

Dems still need a personality to counter Trump.

Trump has a personality?

If politics in a democracy is based on personality, then that democracy is dead.

You did save Social Security and Medicare by the barest of margins. So great suffering was temporarily averted. But that is a very low standard.

Seems Trump may see out his term, but perhaps with a limp and a quack.
You never know, they may actually get enough on him to lock him up as soon as his term ends, as it look unlikely he will ever be impeached successfully. They can embarrass the hell out him though.
Maybe now they can finally get on with exposing all the corruption and criminality and perhaps force him to face having to issue pardons to his own family or see them jailed.
Well, that's my fantasy.....

Impeaching Trump would be an error, it would turn him into a political martyr. Anyway, the Senate will not impeach him. Any impeachment proceedings will absolutely killed in the Senate.

Yes, that's why I wrote that it was now highly unlikely.

Some victories for the Dems, especially in some states like Nevada where the governor, lt. governor and many other races all flipped from GOP to Dems, but overall the political landscape in the U.S. is still heavily controlled by Republicans.

Consider the following major categories and which party has the majority:

U.S. House: Democrats
Senate: Republicans
Governors: Republicans
State legislatures: Republicans
White House: Republicans
Supreme Court: Republicans (non-partisan in theory, but majority of justices are conservative and appointed by Republicans)

That's 5 to 1 still in favor of Republicans in those major categories.

I agree that Dems should not try impeachment, unless there is bipartisan support; however, they may now be in a position to subpoena records and protect Mueller.

Gerrymandering.
This is the biggest issue right now. PA recently was redrawn and it flipped blue in many districts.

Dems hopefully will put a lot of resources into this over the next decade.

Yes. We will have to see what bomb Mueller drops.
But I forsee DT being elected to a second term, unless something un-f-ing believable happens.....

Dems seem to have won the suburbs. Still have no economic message for the working classes.

We need to continue making the case:

Eliminate basic economic insecurities like healthcare (and shore up other basic social safety net programs), open paths for young people to acquire the skills they will need in this economy without saddling them with debt, and infrastructure to lay the ground work for the coming wave of technological advancements that will in the short and medium term offer good paying jobs and get money flowing inside the economy.

Pay for it with taxes on those that benefit the most from our commonwealth.
