chos dbyings mdzod chapter 10 question

Post by Lukeinaz »

Towards the end of chapter 10 we are advised at least three times to "come to a decisive experience of causality." Is this a moment to moment awareness of our unfolding karma? What does "come to a decisive experience of causality" mean to you?

Have you tried consulting Longchenpa's self-commentary to the Choying Dzö, published in English under the title "A Treasure Trove of Scriptural Transmission"? Try reading through his explanations under the verses in ch. 10 that mention "a decisive experience of causality." The phrase occurs on pages 276-277, 285-287, and 300 of the commentary.

It is also advisable to work through the entire commentary from beginning to end to help clarify many crucial points and facilitate contemplation. Chapter 5, entitled "Transcending Effort and Causality," may be of particular interest with regard to your question. You are sure to come across many very profound and direct sections that you will want to review again and again, and not always where you would expect to find them!

To facilitate discussion, here is the phrase in context, as cited on p. 276 of the commentary:
Longchen Rabjam wrote:If awareness in the moment does not stray from the ground of being,
familiarization with that experience negates any furthering of conditioned existence.
You are free of the karma and habitual patterns that perpetuate rebirth.
You have come to the decisive experience of causality, described as the equalness of samsara and nirvana.
You have arrived at the heart essence of enlightenment, which does not abide in conditioned existence or the state of peace.
It is crucial that you distinguish between this and a one-pointed state of calm abiding.
This is the enlightened intent of natural great perfection.

but unstained wisdom is buddha.
In its knowing, ever serene—
I go for refuge therein.

The glossary in the back of Treasure Trove says it's rgyu 'bras that is translated in different places as cause and effect, result, or causality.

Here's the RY article:
