Nyingma/Sarma rabbit hole

Post by passel »

I vaguely remember reading some remarks on this site a while back to the effect, if I remember correctly, that the formation of Nyingma was not so much a response to as an extension of the Sarma Renaissance. I'm misremembering no doubt but I find the idea provocative.

Anyone care to link some threads dealing with the topic? Or point to some relevant scholarship- preferably online papers but I'll make a note of any book-length treatments. For when I retire.

Muchas gracias

I don't know about the particular quote you had in mind, but, really, a lot of this sort of questions depend on what your priorities are, how you define different terms, etc. A little more detail in what you're trying to get at and someone might be able to offer some suggestions.

Mm, not really. It's an obscure question on an obscure topic. The OP is clear enough that anybody with that kind of specific knowledge would get the gist, and could respond if they wanted to.

Come to think of it somebody said even Bon could be seen as a Sarma tradition. I can kind of see how you could make that statement, it's intriguing to me but it's all just conjecture to me at this point. Hence the OP

Can't link the threads- there's so much content on this site by now that I don't try to keep track, I just dip in every once in a while.

Sounds like the Nyingma recovery from persecution is being conflated either the introduction of the Sarma to me.

2. I support Mingyur R and HHDL in their positions against lama abuse.

why not both
It is quite impossible to find the Buddha anywhere other than in one's own mind.
A person who is ignorant of this may seek externally,
but how is it possible to find oneself through seeking anywhere other than in oneself?
Someone who seeks their own nature externally is like a fool who, giving a performance in the middle of a crowd, forgets who he is and then seeks everywhere else to find himself.

Nyingma was persecuted? Just when did that happen?

[Don't know how to do the quote box thing so just cutting and pasting]:

OP: the formation of Nyingma was not so much a response to as an extension of the Sarma Renaissance

Response: why not both

Ya no reason, undoubtedly both. What I'm looking for is some theses clothed in research. You know, a little nourishment for the discursive mind. Social media detox, I'm sure you can sympathize.

Mipham's Beacon of Certainty is a good place to start, if you are interested in Nyingma/Sarma's differences in terms of view.
