Khenchen Pema Sherab Rinpoche

Post by Aryjna » Mon Mar 19, 2018 11:06 pm

I wanted to ask if anyone can provide some information on Khenchen Pema Sherab Rinpoche. I just read that he will be giving several empowerments from the Longchen Nyingtik in London in May. It seems like a good opportunity but it is difficult to find anything more about him online than what is in the wiki.

As with all Lamas you don't know well, caveat emptor. I would spend time taking their non Vajrayāna teachings first.

In this case it doesn't seem possible. The only really reliable way is probably to have a reference from a teacher you trust.

I am sure he is fine. But in general, it is best if one can get some kind of take on the teacher before making serious Vajrayāna commitments.

You can find him teaching Longchenpa's "Thirty Pieces of Advice", here;

Khenchen Pema Sherab is the real deal. He was Dilgo Khyentse's attendant for many years when he first fled into exile and went on to head the shedra at Namdroling, which under his charge became perhaps the most important Nyingma institution of higher learning outside of Tibet. He is one of the most respected Nyingma scholars living today. His credentials are impeccable, so there should be no doubt.

Not all. Three days is not enough.

It sounds strange, but that seems to be the meaning the way it is written on the website. Who knows.

If they were long days, its enough.
I received them in five days, without it being too extreme.
If he really got after it they could be done in 3.

Have you also been to other teachings/transmissions by him? I read that he gives a Dzogchen seminar every autumn but can't find the page now.

Also, do you know if he is he closely associated with Gangteng Tulku, or does he just get invited by yeshkhorlo?

No, I haven't been to his other teachings, haven't even known of him before this. No idea about his association with Gangteng Tulku either, sorry.

When I lived at Namdroling and took monastic vows, Khenchen Pema Sherab was my abbot (primary lama bestowing ordination). Ordination is given once a year at Namdroling. Some years, HH Penor Rinpoche gave the vows and some years he assigned Khenchen to do it. That was the case my year. As others have said, he was a primary disciple of HH Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and has been the senior most Khenpo at Namdroling for decades (one of the three "Khenchens" there, the others being Khenchen Tsewang Gyatso aka "Khenpo Guru" and Khenchen Namdrol Rinpoche). He is known as an excellent scholar, a true practitioner and truly pure Bhikhsu. Though I did not get to spend much time with him, and I did not last very long as a monk, he showed me deep kindness. My friend Lopon Damcho Wangmo (a Canadian ani and the first westerner that I know of to complete Nyingma shedra studies in a Tibetan monastic setting) has been under Khenchen's personal and very close guidance since I first met her in 2003. Khenchen is a staunch supporter of Tibetan nuns in general and as such greatly loved by the Palyul nuns at Namdroling, and is also supportive of working toward full ordination for nuns in the Tibetan tradition. I was fortunate to receive all the lungs for the Root Texts of Longchen Nyingthig (Nyingthig Tsa Pod) from Khenchen when HHPR gave the wangs in Nepal in 2005.

Hope this helps fill in some details about Khenchen. You might find more at palyul.org under the "Teachers" section.

Pema Tsultrim

Thank you, that is helpful. I'd like to ask some more questions about Namdroling through PM if you have time.

Khenchen Pema Sherab Rinpoche is one of the senior-most Khenpos in Nyingma tradition, He was an attendant of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche for 10 years and then close student of Penor Rinpoche among others. One of the oldest lamas of Tibetan Buddhism, I would definitely use the opportunity .
