Found bodhi mala. 94 beads?

Post by KonchogUrgyenNyima » Wed Dec 04, 2019 3:54 am

Hey all,

I just found a nice looking used bodhi seed mala at a thrift store. After buying it i counted the beads and there are only 94, which makes it of no use to me for my ngondro, but i’m wondering if anyone knows why it would only have this many? Is there some tradition behind this?

I know some practices require different amounts of beads on the mala and such.

I’m also suspicious that someone may have lost some beads and then just strung the ones they had back up.

Thanks for your time and consideration in advance my dharma friends.

May our conversation serve to benefit beings greatly

hi,

you can restring it to have 54 beads and use it for ngondro. you can find a good 1mm thick 5-color tibetan string online.

Thank you! Would this also work for 27 beads?

Yes, that is a classic mala for prostrations.

You would need to restring clean and re-bless it anyway. Can’t directly use a mala that someone else has previously used. Pretty sure you can buy 14 Bodhi seed beads from somewhere to add in during that process.

Not a great idea to use a mala you don't know the provenance of. Best to buy a new mala and have your Teacher bless it. Then you bless it again each morning. that way, no worries about broken samaya or any lineage issues.

Konchog, it's just a cheap nepali mala with sanded beads. missing beads are not that uncommon - i also got one with around 7 beads short. are you sure its used? i mean you hardly use a mala with that amount of beads, unless someone is completely ignorant of vajrayana.

27 x 4 = 108 The size make it easy to hold in the hand while doing prostrations. 21 bead mala don't have any use in my universe.

Good point. I hadn't thought of that, but now you ask and I look closely at the picture I wonder the same. The sheen is somehow not quite what I expect to see on a used mala. Not sure, but I'd put my money on it being new.

In particular, the "slots" (can't think of a better word) between the beads look dry and "unrubbed", at least as far as one can see.
All the best
