Thank you everyone for your replies.

I love the idea of stones, or even gems, although I could see that one could get attached to them!

Right now when I practice I either try to imagine the thoughts floating up through my (now open, yay!) crown chakra, or floating down a stream in front of me. However, I am not sure, but I think the Rinpoche with whom I currently study wants me just to sit there, and not do anything. I need to clarify what to do with him.

However, he is not my root lama, and I don't feel a strong pull towards him as a teacher, though I like him. I will probably check with Garchen when he is back in America, or with Konchog, if he comes back, and who was amazing.

The experience of the explosion in my brain was a one of a whole cluster of paranormal experiences that happened after my mother died. Most of the others were extremely disturbing. That's why I wasn't sure what to make of the one of which I spoke.

However everything is better. I am still planning on doing a one year retreat, possibly in India, if my health improves.

I miss my mother terribly.

Bless everyone.

Lisa

Can I make a suggestion Lisa?
Unless there are pressing reasons, like proximity to your root guru, you might want to think carefully before doing a whole years retreat in India. Its tough..and it sounds to me like you need to cosset yourself right now.
If you want to do an extended retreat somewhere exotic () and Kagyu you might want to consider Samye-Ling in Scotland. Just take warm clothes...
If you use the word 'mind' without defining your terms I will ask you politely for a definition.
This is not to be awkward. But it's really not self-explanatory.

Is it even possible to do a one year retreat in India? Isn't the max visa allowance for cultural visitors six months?
