Insights by Khenpo Samdup on this auspicious event:
In 2018 Garchen Rinpoche will be in Dayton for three weeks and is going to give pith instructions that he has not given before. This program is very special because we have supplicated him to give teachings and practices based upon his own experience.

Usually we create a program based upon a specific text or book but with this program Garchen Rinpoche is going to teach from his own experience in this life, from the deep realization he has developed through his practice. These teachings are coming directly from his realizations of the teachings he received from his teachers. He will share the heart teachings he received from his teachers with his students to transform their minds and create immeasurable benefits.
Details on the Pith Instructions:
Garchen Rinpoche will teach the pith instructions he received from his root guru Siddhi Chime Dorjee and Khenpo Munsel. These teachings will present the experiential understanding of these special instructions that Rinpoche developed over more than 20 years of rigorous practice while in prison. These teachings will include all aspects of the path including various practices of Dzogchen and Mahamudra.
Khenpo Samdup explains the nature of these teachings as follows:
It is important to understand the definition of pith instructions. Pith instructions are a very special teaching that is given from the root guru to his close students. These instructions are made up of few words but express a profound meaning and can have an immediate, transformative effect on the student’s mind. These teachings are not from a story from 1,000 years ago; they are from the 20th century, from a person alive today sharing his own direct experience and deep accomplishment. I was encouraged to request these teachings for the benefit of many students now and in the future.

After receiving these teachings from Garchen Rinpoche, he will single-pointedly bring them all together thru instructions on the Fivefold Path of Mahamudra based on Jigten Sumgön's Song of Realization. This will provide a path for students to be able to easily practice these instructions in their daily lives.

Does anyone if there will be recordings available afterwards for those who can't attend/participate?

Having attended several of the teachings and retreats there, i can tell you that usually a USB with recordings is able to be purchased after the teachings. However I'm not sure if it's only available for those in attendance or not.

Perhaps if you contact them and mention that you live streamed the teachings they'll make an exception if it's the former. I wouldn't necessarily expect a prompt reply though, as they're no doubt quite busy now with Rinpoche there. Then again, maybe you'll get lucky and they'll respond during the week when there aren't teachings scheduled.

Mel from the Gar Drölma sangha suggested using an alternate email ([email protected]) in the YouTube chat today, so you might also try sending a message there if you don't receive a reply. He indicated that attendance via webcast qualified us to purchase the recordings, and said that the sooner we sign up for them the better, with the gentle reminder that they wouldn't be available until after the retreat is finished.

Usually they're handed out on the last day just before the last session, but it's possible they may have to dole them out to everyone via the mail if they're simply not ready before the crowds disperse.

For those who attended today's Guru Dragpo empowerment, here's a high-res pic of the thangka they were using to advertise the event. Mantra available upon PM request.

Will the pith instructions be webcasted?

Yes it will be and according to Gar Drolma FB page it seems that Garchen Rinpoche will teach on the three statements of Garab Dorje today!
“Observing samaya involves to remain inseparable from the union of wisdom and compassion at all times, to sustain mindfulness, and to put into practice the guru’s instructions”. Garchen Rinpoche

For those who do virtuous actions,
goodness is what comes to pass.
For those who do non-virtuous actions,
that becomes suffering indeed.

Where did you see that detail mentioned, Miroku? Last thing I see on their FB page is the post about the Gur Drak wang from 13 hours ago. Can you screenshot it for us, please? Not being able to access my FB account is really starting to feel like an obstacle to being informed about Dharma events...

In years past, GR has used Patrul Rinpoche's text, The Special Teaching of the Wise and Glorious King, to teach Garab Dorje's Three Statements that Strike the Vital Points. For those interested in reading them in case Rinpoche utilizes them again, Lotsawa House has both the root text and auto-commentary.

This was the first teaching i was able to receive in person from GR after years of webcasting in, so needless to say I'm elated at the prospect of hearing the nectar of the guru's speech once again!
