My friend Bruce Newman did a 4-year strict retreat at Samye Ling years ago and had remarked upon how unprepared most of the other retreatants were and that being cloistered with some bizarre personalities for so long was by far the most difficult part of the retreat.

Bruce's book is well thought-out and I recommend it: https://www.amazon.com/Beginners-Guide- ... oks&sr=1-1

...how unprepared most of the other retreatants were...
Which prompts the question of what constitutes being properly prepared.

2. I support Mingyur R and HHDL in their positions against lama abuse.

Not too off-topic, I hope, but I do like the way you use the word "prompts" instead of misusing "begs".
All best wishes

I did initially. Then I checked Wikipedia and chickened out.
Wiki wrote:In modern vernacular usage, "begging the question" is often[2] used to mean "raising the question" or "dodging the question".[1] In contexts that demand strict adherence to a technical definition of the term, many consider these usages incorrect.[3]
