Virupa's Mahamudra Doha

Post by Astus »

Is this doha known among Sakyapas? If so, how do they explain it, especially the following stanza:

"Some are completely tortured with empowerment rites,
some always count their rosary saying hum phat!
some consume shit, piss, blood, semen and meat,
some meditate the yoga of nadi and vayu, but all are deluded."
1 Myriad dharmas are only mind.
Mind is unobtainable.
What is there to seek?

2 If the Buddha-Nature is seen,
there will be no seeing of a nature in any thing.

3 Neither cultivation nor seated meditation —
this is the pure Chan of Tathagata.

4 With sudden enlightenment to Tathagata Chan,
the six paramitas and myriad means
are complete within that essence.

Tashi delek A,

Nice Stanza.

- Is a Stanza always composed out of 4 lines?
- Why would be all deluded ?
- is this Stanza dealing with Tantra maybe?
- What is here the meaning of phat?

Since this is my translation, I will answer. Until you are realized, you are deluded.

The poem seems to advocate entering Mahamudra directly and not through various stages, so the question if this is interpreted in a different way.

It is not about that, it is about being attached to methods.

It also says:
“Mahamudra” is a mental imputation of the childish.
It also clarifies that a guru is indispensable:
Having been connected with a sublime Guru,
The main verse cited from this by Sakyapas is the following:
All sentient beings are emanations of mahamudra,
the essence of those emanations is the forever non-arising dharmadhatu,
also all characteristics of dualistic appearances, happiness, suffering and so on,
are the play of mahamudra, the original dharmata.

Thanks for posting the main verse.
I am well aware of my idiocy. I am also very aware that you too are an idiot. Therein lies our mutuality.

Are the dohas in the link above the only dohas of Virupa to be translated? Are they apart of a larger collection?

Thanks.

There are a couple of short verses here and there, but this is the only complete large doha.

P-H-A-T: pretty, hot, and tempting

It's a wrathful seed syllable, often related to prajnaparamita.
