That is an excellent little article!

Evidently there is one sutra, at least, that speaks of benefits from using a prayer wheel. Anyone familiar with Chu klung chen po’i mdo (The Great River Sutra)?

One obvious warning regarding the construction of prayer wheels one buys:
Prayer wheels should be constructed under the guidance and direction of an experienced Lama. Prayer wheels should also be blessed and consecrated by a Lama.

More of the benefits from using the Wheel:
The way of visualizing the wheel called Om mani padme hum comes in the
tantra entitled The Condensed Secrecy of the Compassionate-Eyed One. It is as
follows: "Light beams from the great Dharma wheel take the delusions, sufferings
[Skt. dukkha], imprints (or predispositions), and seeds of all sentient
beings in the six realms and cause these to be collected and absorbed into the
six -syllable wheel. All the disturbing thoughts, karmas, seeds, and imprints are
burnt, destroyed, and purified. If one does this practice, one is liberated from
the causes, conditions, and results of samsara-from all disturbing thoughts,
karma, and obscurations. This is the wheel cutting the root of samsara. Keep
extremely secret and cherish this practice.

"Through light beams emanating from the mantras of the precious wheel
and striking migratory beings, they spontaneously develop the four immeasurable
thoughts-loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. They complete
the practice of the six perfections-giving, morality, patience, perseverance,
concentration, and wisdom."

Forgot to mention that the Wheel of Great Compassion book gives pretty explicit instructions on how to build a standing or handheld Dharma wheel. It even supplies the parts with Tibetan script that could be copied by those who cannot read Tibetan.

Since part of the potency has to do with the number of mantras inside, if one can buy microfilm copies that will boost the benefits much.
