Kalon Tsering Phuntsok Honours Students at Sera Jey University's Convocation

Bylakuppe: The 15th annual convocation of Sera Jey University for Advanced Buddhist Studies and Practice was held on 28 August 2010 on the momentous confluence of the 75th birthday of Holiness the Dalai Lama, the golden jubilee of Tibetan democracy in exile and the first National General of Tibetans in Bylakuppe.

It is an academic ceremony held for students completing the Madhyamika (Uma) and Prajna Paramita (pharchin), two of the five main courses, after several years of studying and understanding the vast treasure of knowledge and wisdom.

Around 3,500 people, including top officials of the Central Tibetan Administration, Jangtse Cheoje Losang Tenzin Rinpoche, representatives of schools of Tibetan Buddhism and students, attended the convocation.

The abbot of Sera Jey Monastery, Khen Rinpoche Lobsang Palden gave the introductory address, following which the names of the graduate students were announced.

Kalon for the department of religion and culture, Kalon Tsering Phuntsok, presented merit certificates to 166 graduate students.

Ven Gendun Soepa of Hordong Khangtsen topped the merit lists.

Addressing the gathering, Kalon Tripa said remembering the monastic community's poor living conditions at Buxa Duar brings poignant memories, but we feel happy to see the changes of progress taking place now.

He said the main objective of learning Madhyamika and Prajna Paramita studies is to achieve a standard learning of the major treatises of the Buddhist teachings.

Reiterating His Holiness the Dalai Lama's advice, Kalon Tsering Phuntsok called for efforts to become 21st century Buddhists.

Certificates were conferred on those students of the monastery's secondary school who achieved distinction in the All India Secondary School Examination Certificates. The students were honoured by Education Kalon Thubten Lungrig.
