FPMT Empowerment

Post by Lobsang Chojor » Sat Apr 30, 2016 6:38 pm

Hi

In a few months I will be able to receive either the white Tara or medicine Buddha empowerment (action tantra) from Dagri Rinpoche.

So my questions are:

What can I expect at an empowerment from Dagri Rinpoche?

Will Bodhisattva vows be given?

Is refuge required?

Good news!

Expect to be sitting for a while and listening to alot of liturgy mumbled in tibetan.
Both refuge and bodhissattva vows will be given during during the ceremony.

Thank you

Have you got any experience with Dagri Rinpoche? And do you have any ideas at how long it will last?

If you are not sure whether you want to take Refuge, then why would you want to practice White Tara or Medicine Buddha, may I ask? Not wanting to take Refuge is like not wanting to be a Buddhist (which is fine if that is your choice), while bodhicitta similarly defines the Mahayana path. And what would be the point of tantric empowerments without this Mahayana basis? Long life...?

I do want to take refuge, I just haven't formally taken them yet, but I've organised to take refuge with with the Geshe before the empowerment.

I was just wondering if refuge is part of the empowerment.

Refuge is a part of any empowerment.

But the official "Taking Refuge Ceremony" is taken only once in front of a Lama. You have to take it before you can get an empowerment.
At least in Gelug tradition they use to handle it like that, as far as I know.

you should be able to ask for a refuge name after the empowerment is over.

Hello everybody. I haven't been around this forum for ages.

As far as I know, nor Medicine Buddha or Tara empowerments include taking boddhisattva vows (Chenrezing or Vajrasattva do, for example).

As for taking refuge, it's included in the empowerment ceremony already. In fact there is a formal refuge ceremony that is done only once before a teacher, but what's important about it is the secret refuge: Your personal conviction. In fact most buddhist -gelug tradition in urban areas, at least- don't celebrate the refuge ceremony and the five lay Pratimoksha vows are taken individualy, by yourself.

Regarding a name, I've been a buddhist for 12 years or so and I think some masters can give you a tibetan name, but I think it's just some Westerners desire to feel or appear more "exotic" maybe...? A formal tibetan name is received along with ordination.

My personal experience in London with the FPMT is that Geshe Tashi provides the opportunity to take refuge formally once or twice a year. At that time, those who have discussed it with Geshe Tashi are then given a refuge name. If someone wishes to formally take one or more of the 5 lay vows, this is also possible at this time but only after discussing it with Geshe-la.
