Talking negatively about others?

What would Nichiren Buddhism have to say about this and why is it that those who have the most to hide/faults feel the need to tarnish others?

Don't do it?

But, pointing out error, in the appropriate circumstance, is not talking negatively.

As to why do people denigrate each other? We can't help it? We're flailing around, trying to alleviate our suffering, but don't know any better? We all need someone to bleed on?
