I am currently an independent practitioner and I have recently acquired an Omamori Gohonzon privately from another practitioner. It is on it's way in the mail and I wanted to ask a few questions about it. First some background about me: I left SGI back in 2011 and have been practicing on my own ever since. Recently I gave my original Okatagi Nichikan Gohonzon from SGI to my ex who started chanting back when we were living together. I decided to invite another Gohonzon into my home and decided the Omamori would be all I could accommodate because of the small space and limited privacy I have right now.
I've never had an Omamori before and would like to hear other's experiences with them? I also ordered a wooden butsudan for it. I've read some sects believe it's not suitable for daily gongyo and is more for protection? I know the Omamori I'm set to receive is and SGI-Nichikan Gohonzon. I've heard the plastic carrying cases on these are flimsy and prone to breaking? As for the actual Gohonzon itself, is my understanding correct that it is sealed in an acrylic casing and then set in the (usually) white carrying case? I've seen some that have been reset by jewelers in metal cases...
Anyway, I intend to do my daily Gongy/Daimoku with this Omamori and would be interested in hearing what others have experienced with it themselves?

Re: Omamori Gohonzon
I don't see any problem with it. I've heard suggestions that they are not appropriate for daily practice, but that seems overly fussy. The way I see it, what's important is your disposition and practice.
PS. when I was travel, I carry an omamori and set it up for practice. Other than being small and hard to read... it helped me to have a consistent practice even when I was itinerant and on the road. I can only speak for myself on that point, though.

There is no suffering to be severed. Ignorance and klesas are indivisible from bodhi. There is no cause of suffering to be abandoned. Since extremes and the false are the Middle and genuine, there is no path to be practiced. Samsara is nirvana. No severance achieved. No suffering nor its cause. No path, no end. There is no transcendent realm; there is only the one true aspect. There is nothing separate from the true aspect.

Talking about omamoris...
Re: Omamori Gohonzon
My district chief in the old NSA days had one he took with him whenever he travelled, gongyo in the hotel room sort of things- he had a custom made case, the local youth div leader was an art woodworker made it for him. One of the mens div in my current SGI area also has one, kept on his home altar- so not the focus as such but better there than in a drawer. I've never heard any instruction as to daily suitability though I could well imagine a regular gohonzon being generally preferable as a daily driver simply because its easier to see.
I recall a few events where someone's omamori was up on stage, the focus of gongyo for hundreds of people.

Re: Omamori Gohonzon
Thank you guys for your replies. I appreciate the feedback. I missed having any Gohonzon to chant to as it’s been some time since I broke up with my ex. I’m glad he has a Gohonzon to chant to and practice with. I’m confident I’ll eventually get another normal/regular sized Gohonzon soon and all the butsugu accessories that go with it.
Can anyone comment on the Omamori Gohonzon itself? Am I correct in learning that the Gohonzon is sealed in a acrylic case and then housed in an exterior plastic carrying case with a swivel door? I think I’ve seen some Omamori Gohonzon that have been remounted in new housings because the plastic cases were prone to breaking?

I can't speak to anything other than the omamori I have which I received back in the 90s. It is in a plastic case, with a plastic transparent sheet over the gohonzon itself. I wore it around my neck for months at a time, backpacking, trekking, etc. in a custom made leather case and have never had any worry that the case would break.
Older omamori that were distributed in the 60s, 70s are in a silver case. My parents each have one. I actually think the plastic case I have is more durable and maybe even water tight.
