If you’re “unaffiliated,” I guess it would be okay, but a Nichiren Shu priest would issue a new person a “temporary” mandala (I never had one of those, so I’m not sure what they look like exactly) until your jukai and then they’d give you a Shutei Mandala Gohonzon.

Where did you find that? I haven’t seen it anywhere before.

Hey, if Honzon of novel design are getting circulated... maybe seeds are taking root.
Those who, even with distracted minds,
Entered a stupa compound
And chanted but once, “Namo Buddhaya!”
Have certainly attained the path of the buddhas.

There are beings with little dust in their eyes who are falling away because they do not hear the Dhamma. There will be those who will understand the Dhamma.

I think I just googled Gohonzon.

That's a good point.

Too bad there's not even a Nichiren Shu temple in my state.

Me, I wouldn't touch it. I'm very conservative in some ways when it comes to matters of faith.

o.p was asking about the likely Nichiren Shu perspective, but it would not be accepted in Shoshu/SGI. The SGI response at least would be to encourage its replacement with a standard issue gohonzon, depending on circumstances the local members might contribute items to complete the butsudan- candles, incense, altar, starter ashes and so on.

I don’t know where you are, but several Nichiren Shu ministers will work with you remotely, if you’re interested. I’m about 3 hours from my temple, which isn’t terribly far, but I’m not able to visit often.
