The Stupa Builders

Post by Queequeg » Sat Sep 21, 2019 4:56 pm

Thereupon the Buddha addressed the great assembly of bodhisattvas, beginning with Viśiṣṭacāritra:

“The transcendent powers of the buddhas are as immeasurable, limitless, and inconceivable as this. Yet if I were to use these transcendent powers to teach the benefits of this sutra so that it would be entrusted to you for immeasurable, limitless, hundreds of thousands of myriads of koṭis of incalculable kalpas, I would not be able to reach the end of these qualities. To sum up, in this sutra I have clearly revealed and taught all the teachings of the Tathāgata, all the transcendent powers of the Tathāgata, all the treasure houses of the hidden essence of the Tathāgata, and all the profound aspects of the Tathāgata. For this reason, after the parinirvāṇa of the Tathāgata, you should wholeheartedly preserve, recite, explain, and copy it, and practice according to the teaching. Those who accept, recite, explain, and copy it, and practice according to the teaching, in whichever land they may be, in a place where the sutra abides—either in a garden, a forest, under a tree, in a monk’s chamber, in a layman’s house, in a palace, on a mountain, in a valley, or in the wilderness—in all of these places they should erect and pay homage to a monument. Why is this? Because you should know that these places are the terraces of enlightenment where all the buddhas have attained highest, complete enlightenment, where all the buddhas have turned the wheel of the Dharma, and where all the buddhas entered parinirvāṇa.”

Nipponzan Myohoji build stupas all over the world... This will be the third in the United States.
Those who, even with distracted minds,
Entered a stupa compound
And chanted but once, “Namo Buddhaya!”
Have certainly attained the path of the buddhas.

If my motorcycle trip next spring works out I'll visit the stupa in Massachussetts, would like to visit some sanghas up there too.

I didn't realize Nichiren folks built stupas at all, thanks for educating me!

Actually, its hard to visualize, but the mandala that Nichiren Buddhists enshrine is the stupa of Prabhutaratna Tathagata. Its not readily apparent and I don't think many Nichiren Buddhists even realize it.

This order, Nipponzan Myohoji, builds stupas as one of their practices. They also perform Peace Walks dedicated to causes like the eradication of nuclear weapons, the environment, and particularly in the Northeast, they are associated with Native American causes.

Their founder is an compelling character. IIRC, he was protesting against Japanese militarism around the time of the Pacific war, so he was basically kicked out of Japan and went to live in India where he became a close friend of Gandhi. The story is that he suggested to Gandhi that the Indian flag should include Asoka's wheel.

When you visit major pilgrimage sites around India, you will find stupas built by this order - you can't miss them. They are always big, white dome shaped stupas.

In Japan, pagodas are the Japanese iteration of the stupa. You find them in many temple precincts, including Nichiren temples. Outside of this order, though, stupa building is not a common practice.

I'm loving the look of this stupa. It has a real Ghandaran feel to it.
