Speaking nembutsu vs thinking it

Post by Boomerang »

Hi everybody. I started learning about Pure Land Buddhism this week, and I'm unsure about a certain aspect of nembutsu. If I'm trying to be mindful of Amida Buddha throughout the day, is it okay if I repeat the nembutsu in my head, or do I have to say it out loud while I'm walking around? Is one better than the other?

Both saying it out loud and saying it in your head (heart) are better then not saying it!

Here is a link to an English version of one of my favorite books ever:

And this is also a very good book which contains a section on common questions about pureland practice:

Thank you very much. I actually prefer to sit down and say it silently to myself. I hope that's okay.

You can say it loud or think. Both ways are ok.

Nevertheless, if you say it loud, it would be better to not be in a disrespectful situation, like saying Nembutsu while on WC. But with your mind (ie, "thinking" instead of saying) you can do it ANY time.

The more you say, with a sincere heart, the better.

Water Closet.
It's a term for the toilet that was coined in England in the 1880s and is a bit more popular outside of the US.

My throat was so sore this past week I could barely swallow let alone speak or chant. Amida was still a great comfort hearing and reciting mentally :)
