What is auspicious sign?

Post by PauloJ » Thu Jan 24, 2019 12:36 am

I see dharma brothers speaking about auspicious sign. But, it is not clear what it means, at least it is not clear to me.
So I have a question:

What is auspicious sign? Are there concrete examples that I can relate to?

Tranks

For Pure Land, auspicious signs tend to manifest at or after the time of death in most examples.
Includes things like:
- Dying standing up
- Sweet smells in the room of the deceased
- Rigor mortis not setting in days after death: soft body, rosy cheeks, smiles that come and go (not due to final tightening of the muscles)
- Purple clouds
- Rainbows (particularly circular)
- Music that seems to come from nowhere
- Light

There's also some pre-death ones that are fairly widespread:
- Dreams of Amitabha
- Predicting the date/time of one's death
- Light emanating from the practitioner

Take a look here.
There is also this chapter from Buddhism of Wisdom and Faith, but the language is a bit technical in parts.

My experiences have revolved around a few themes that give nembutsu its character. These are like auspicious signs for me, because they show nembutsu is something unique, distinct from other words.

The themes have been: losing fear, seeing my faults more and more, light in my mind, gaining equanimity, shedding grudges and ill will, no more migraines, encountering many Dharma teachings, finding Buddha statues in strange places, nightmares ending in golden light, being surprised by devotion towards Buddhist images, seeing new layers of meaning in Dharma texts. I think if you search this forum, you'll find other examples too. There's the Benefits of Nembutsu thread.
With a heart wandering in ignorance down this path and that, to guide me I simply say Namu-amida-butsu. -- Ippen

If in your heart you hold the thought, "I shall continue to utter the nembutsu," the Buddha will turn his attention to you, and thus you are one among those who are thought about and cherished. -- Master Hōnen

Thank you very much for the answers.
- Light emanating from the practitioner
I found this sign very interesting.
- Rainbows (particularly circular)
Is there some reason to be particularly circular?
There's the Benefits of Nembutsu thread.
I'll see that thread. Thanks
