"Mikhail Sannikov served in Afghanistan in the 1980s, But turned to buddhism after being charged with manslaughter and stripped of his rank"
World's most unlikely Buddhist monk, at least thats what they called him.
I love this guy's story, very Ashoka like, and to start building a monastery all by himself! Too bad there aren't Russian buddhists (that I know of) here on DW that can testify.
Homage to you, blissful, virtuous and peaceful,

Fully possessing the om and the soha,
You overcome even the greatest of evils.

I'm not exactly Russian but it is my mother-tongue. Reading up on the Lama a little, the monastery complex is threatened with demolition - apparently there are minerals in the ground and he doesn't have full ownership of the land. There's also a very long and rather vicious article which alleges that he is a phony. An intriguing story, regardless.
