I'm pretty sure the more accurate sounds would be screaming, bombs, and evil laughter.

And HELLO! NASA is given money for scientific research purposes, not so pencil-necked-geeks (scientists) can play artist.

Given the gargantuan wastes of money that go into military spending and a lack of funds resulting from corporate welfare, I have no problem at all with Nasa using tax money to make some cool sounds. Plus, I can sample them and make something halfway cool so, win win.Grigoris wrote: ↑Tue Jul 31, 2018 6:03 pm"America does it so it must be okay" is about the dumbest argument I have seen in support of this project yet.Queequeg wrote: ↑Tue Jul 31, 2018 3:18 pm By the way. BTW, as someone who has listened to weird stuff like this for years (there were whole projects using "sounds from space"), i've thought about the fact that such things are obviously higly processed and are not in any real sense what someone would "hear" in space or from the Sun. The very nature of trying to record something like means you are always getting to one degree or another an "artists rendition", whether they call themselves artists or not.
The unwritten rule for these things is "this is what it -might- sound like if you could actually record it"
Following your logic, some of Carl Sagan's work was very much "pencil neck Geek" playing an artist, in much the same way.

I'm not gonna bother with a pretense of "logic" in this conversation, I'm not seeing it anywhere else.

Well, after this conversation I have decided to apply to the European Space Agency and NASA for funding to produce a virtual visual map of the dark side of the moon.
I figure if they are stupid enough to throw money at a project which gives an audio representation of a phenomenon that we actually cannot hear, then they must be retarded enough to splurge on a visual representation of something we cannot see.
My next project will be to ask for crap loads of money to send a space probe to Nibiru to assess it's viability for sustaining invisible human and animal life forms.

Re: Sounds of the Sun
Satire aside, you want a "serious" response?
If you take the time to find out how they came up with the "sound of the sun", you'd see that they're taking data from events on the sun and reinterpreting it as sound. Its another way to interpret the data. One that turns out to be quite interesting to some of us.
Actually, anyone or anything close enough to hear the sun would be ash long before they heard anything... in that case... what is the sound of the sun if no one is around to hear it?
Building on your opinion about the value of this, you then make this a pivot to remark on the healthcare debate in the US.
What do you care how American tax revenue is spent? Especially on things like NASA and our healthcare. You don't live here. These have connection to you only in the most remote way. You've repeatedly expressed your lack of interest in ever visiting and your overall disdain. This isn't a vacuum - we know you. So what do you care if some Trumpist troglodyte wants to complain about those egg heads at NASA and Obamacare? They're as worth listening to you as your, "nobody has fun until everyone gets money" opinion.
NASA definitely has a technological mission. Its also part of the government which is ultimately "for the people." I'm guessing you have no actual real experience with NASA. As an American, I can tell you, I have. Since childhood.
NASA has, since the beginning, been conscious of their mission to not only shoot people into space, but to engage the public, stoke the imagination, help us to dream big. I still have prints that NASA used to distribute for free to children who wrote requesting them. They were photos taken on the various Apollo missions. Some of those prints I posted on the wall of my bedroom and stared at for hours, thinking about space, and the Earth, and rocket ships and... whatever else. My son, through his grandmother, a physicist who gets to travel to conferences where NASA has PR outreach (and who sometimes "plays" around with the really cool equipment like electron microscopes in her tax payer funded lab) has come into possession of jig saw puzzles, posters, calendars and 3-D cards that teach about the Earth, and space, and weather phenomena, that he looks at from time to time and we talk about. I can see how those things light fires of curiosity in little minds, inspiring little humans who might one day be the next generation of NASA scientists.
My point is, talk to any scientist and most will tell you, it wasn't the math equations that captured their imaginations - it was a picture of the galaxies, or science fiction novels, or wanting to help people...
When I hear people like you complaining about the use of taxpayer money - and seriously, in the scale of things, how much of NASA's budget do you really think was used to make that video? - on stuff like this, my response
And that would be the same whether its someone complaining we should not be exploring space as long as people are poor, or its some person screaming about the terror of socialism and waste of money on those indoctrination factories called universities.
This photo was distributed by NASA and has probably been one of the most influential images of the last 100 years:
HOW AWFUL! Its just ink on paper. Its not really the Earth. Those liars.
Someone else touched on this - sound is actually just our experience of vibrations in the air, translated into electrical impulses that we experience as "sound".

This project being "complete and utter bullshit" is nothing more than your opinion. You may find no value in it. You may even think its a lie. But again, these are your opinions about its value. The fact is, there is real data underlying the sounds we hear in that video. See Norwegian's posts above. Processed through an algorithm we get the "sound of the sun."Good to see NASA wasting tax money on complete and utter bullshit, while conservatives complain about where the funding would come from for universal health care.

No, not any more.
It just strikes me as ironic that somebody calling for tax payers money to be spent properly (ie as allocated), is labelled an ideologue and a leftist. I think it says quite a lot about the fraked up state of this world.

Because, actually, the taxes are being spent properly. These kinds of outreach and PR items are part of the NASA budget. You're the one making these assertions without any actual knowledge of NASA's mission.
