The Essence of Buddhism by Jo Durden Smith

Post by Keith__ » Mon Feb 24, 2020 7:59 pm

I've read this book a couple of times. The language is easy to follow and it gives a nice overview of key Buddhist ideas and a rough outline of how Buddhism spread across Asia and beyond.

Quick question: did Jo Durden Smith practise Buddhism? Looking at his other work on Wikipedia, it seems like an odd choice to write a book about Buddhism, but I cannot find any reference to his religion online. I was just curious.

never heard of the man until reading about him although have now found an obituary. I haven't encountered that book, either, but as he was a filmmaker and journalist, then it's not unlikely that he could write intelligently on the subject. Nothing in the brief material I have read about him indicates any association with Buddhism beyond his authoring of that book.

The name rings a bell...was he associated with the London Buddhist Society at one point?
