This is excellent.

For some insights on the different aspects and activities of Tendai internationally, including the leadership of the Hawaii mission in the link rory posted, this thread will be useful:

I pointed this out as it was particularly tragic that Rev. Keisho Leary died unexpectedly and then the California Tendai monastery burned down (it looked beautiful), so it's very encouraging to see Tendai continue in California

Also it is pretty inspiring to see woman priests in leadership roles: Rev. Ryoei Tyler and Rev. Eishin Kusaba.

DGA are you still a practicing Tendai priest or now more into Dzogchen?

I resigned my role as the leader of Great River Tendai Sangha about a year ago so that I could care for our new daughter and resolve some other issues. I tried to return my robes to Monshin sensei, but he refused to accept them, so officially I'm on a leave of absence. The DC sangha is now led by my friend Junsen Chris Nettles, who is doing an excellent job.

I've practiced Tibetan Buddhism in one way or another since 2003, and while there are obvious differences between Tendai and, say, Nyingma at the practices that are emphasized and the lexicon that is used, in the spirit of the teachings I see no contradictions. The Buddha vehicle is the Buddha vehicle.

Ah well sometimes we need a break....as long as you continue to practice the Buddhadharma that's the thing.

Though who is Rev. Ryoei Tyler, from the links it seems she's a mathematician? So very interesting. It is a very big deal to see two women in charge, A real breath of fresh air! I'm pretty excited to see this.

I don't know her, but I did meet her in Japan in 2013. She's a student of the great Ara sensei, and she's doing good work in the Bay Area.

I agree that having giving women the opportunity to train and lead is an excellent development.

Rev. Dr Ryoei Tyler is one of Ara Sensei's Deshi, and my Senpai (Senior). She has always been of immense support, and her work is greatly beneficial. As mentioned, she is a mathematician by trade, and utilises it in her style of teaching. I just saw a picture of myself on the website...that is always offputting!

Her work is really beginning to blossom, and I am sure that there will be many good things to come out of all of this. Thank you for linking her new website to here Rory. She is a very skilled and sincere practitioner. I speak to her every week or so, and she always visits on her frequent trips to Tokyo.

I cannot praise Ryoei Sensei enough, for the great work she has been doing. She is always tireless, and dilligent in the practice.
Gassho,
Jikai.
