Laity in Tendai Buddhism

Post by DGA »

This is part of a post that Ven. Jikai made in a different thread:
jikai wrote:The Ango is a temple at the foot of Mt Hiei designed to give lay people a taste of Buddhist practice. The instructions are therefore simplified versions of monastic practices and training.
I would like to open a discussion on what the role of lay practitioners has been and could be in Tendai Buddhism. What do laypeople do in Tendai-shu? What is their role relative to the ordained?

This is a very good question but I don't think I necessarily have the answers. I don't know what the role of lay people is in Japan but I get the impression it's very similar to Christian laity in the Church of England. In that regard I think lay people can play a vital role in the shanghai in helping the priest with temple/group duties, as well as running smaller sitting groups and other such functions such as fundraising. In Japan the lay goenka/wasan groups. Such a thing would also be nice here.
