Writings of Saicho

Post by markatex »

I don’t think I’ve heard any of his writings mentioned, except Candle of the Latter Dharma, which apparently wasn’t actually written by him.

What are his major writings? Are any available in English?

Take a look at Groner's biography of Saicho. It's called Saicho.

This is from a Google search for "Saicho PDF". Some of them are papers about Ven Saicho, but have quotations from him.

Then, the monks uttered this gāthā:

These bodies are like foam.
Them being frail, who can rejoice in them?
The Buddha attained the vajra-body.
Still, it becomes inconstant and ruined.
The many Buddhas are vajra-entities.
All are also subject to inconstancy.
Quickly ended, like melting snow --
how could things be different?

The Buddha passed into parinirvāṇa afterward.

Over the next few years I will be translating the Kenkairon, one of Saicho's major works. I recently signed a contract with the Society for the Promotion of Buddhism (Bukkyo dendo kyokai: http://www.bdkamerica.org/bdk-tripitaka ... -downloads) As that work it progresses, I will post relevant passages here and on the Tendai Buddhist Institute website (tendai.org).

Thank you for making this translation available for the English speaking world! :anjali: I always had the feeling that while there is Tendai practice in the West it is still really difficult to properly study Tendai without knowledge of Chinese and Japanese.

Thanks for the replies. What would you say are the major ideas Saicho contributed to Tendai? How is The Candle of the Latter Dharma viewed in present-day Tendai?
