Changbu Gyasa Healing Ritual

Post by Tsultrim T. »

Is anyone familiar with this ritual, the lineage it is from, etc? Thanks.

The Changbu Gyasa is an optional section of the Surmang Chod.
"All the sublime teachings, so profound--to throw away one and then grab yet another will not bear even a single fruit. Persevere, therefore, in simply one."

I believe it is in the Rinchen Threngwa which may be its locus classicus. Pegyal Lingpa has a version in His chod teachings which I received from Tsewang Sithar Rinpoche. Lama Wangdu does it, but I'm not sure where the version He does comes from. I'm not familiar with a Longchen Nyingthig version, but that just be my ignorance. I believe there are numerous versions of it from various chod cycles.

This last summer, we're at the nunnery associated with Kusum Lingpa's monastery in Golok and the nuns were doing jang-bu gya-tsa for someone. Sixty or 70 nuns were all making the jang-bu. There was a pile of them five feet in diameter and 3-4 feet high. Quite impressive. I didn't recognize the liturgy they were singing.

My cushion calls.

Ok I am pretty sure then that I have been with Lama Wangdu when he has performed this ritual before. Is it basically a ransom torma offering for someone then? Also does anyone know if there is a version of this practice contained within Dudjom Tersar? thanks for the responses!

Hi Tsultrim,
yes, there is this practice within the Thröma Nagmo of the Düdjom Tersar. The Changbu Gyatsa ritual bears the title:
chos nyid nam mkha'i klong mdzod las mkha' 'gro khros ma'i cha lag changs bu sha dum bsngo thabs bzhugs so

Whereas the practice given above is to be done for someone else, there is another practice the yogi can do for himself, also involving the offering of changbu ("fist print tormas"):
chos nyid nam mkha'i klong mdzod las mkha' 'gro khros ma'i cha lag lus gdon mkha' 'gro'i zhal bstab bzhugs so

No idea whether there exist any translations of those texts.

Hope that helps. Kind regards,
Sagara

Thanks Sagara,
Do you happen to know what pages these texts are on within the volume?

The Changbu Gyatsa is found in
bdud 'joms gter chos Vol 10 W28732-4625-5-558-any
pp. 319 ff

The ritual for the yogi is in the same volume on pp. 303 ff

Above volume is the reference in TBRC. Nice detail, the bdud 'joms gter chos is computer typed and thus easy to read.
