Thanks bro.

Thats actually the document that got me thinking I’d like to make my own. The part I’m particularly unclear about is how to properly stretch the skin. I might get one of the cheap tourist ones described and backward-engineer it.

Yeah, it's just so hard to obtain human bones these days. I asked at the local charnel ground store whether they have any for sales (a bit of leftover skin would also be nice), but they told me that they were out of them due to high demand. So, still searchin for the right material.

Check out Nicholas Breeze Wood on Facebook. He had a lot of drum making experience and has recently posted pics of renovating a Chod damaru with mantras inside, skin stretching etc.

Thanks Mantrik. I dont have my fb account activated atm, but likely will as he seems like an interesting guy from his website.

It's very difficult to find hands on guidance on this, so this is a great opportunity: https://www.dakiniswhisper.com/damaru-clinic

Thanks Dharmaswede. Sorry, I didnt notice this post until now.
Do you know if they will cover re-skining drums when the skins come unglued?

Anyone know where to get a fairly inexpensive Chod drum without the skin painted green? The ones with “cloud skins” seem to double the cost from the average $130 US for a starter drum. Swap the wood for something nice and it approaches triple.

The painted skins apparently buckle after a few months to a year. This is a shame because if they were just left unpainted they would last a long time if reasonably cared for- like any other hand drum.

Changing skins is not the primary focus of these clinics – and I don't know what kind of help you could get on that particular issue.

The issue of buckled skins has been discussed here on Dharmawheel before with promising suggestions on how to tackle it, search.

I have no special knowledge about damarus (though I must say I've had a standard green one for 20 or 30 years no problem and a green chöd one for 11 or 12 years, no problem), but with a slight musical background I'd just say that the skin you show is beyond repair. If you can find someone to put on new skins then you may be in business.
All the best
