:yinyang: A while ago i saw a picture of buddhist in bodhgaya i think who had on a white robe and large black neck beads.

I was curious what kind of neck beads they were?

Which buddhist tradition wears a upper white robe?

Just curious, the beads were similar to the ones found on Akuma of street fighter

I believe the big beads are worn in Chan and Tendai Buddhism. But this is just a guess.

I would like to know why they're so big.

From the description they reminded me of some Shaolin beads I've previously seen. After a quick Google I found this... Probably not the most functional.... Image

Shaolin huh, perhaps the intent is to make the observer go "huh?!", giving the kungfu artist time to make a clever move!

I'm sorry but I can't help but think this is the buddhist mala version of 'compensating for something'. :)

Throw some clocks on as guru beads and the Dharma might finally start making inroads into the inner city.

Why would that work?
Forget the clock i might put a huge sanskrit, tibetan or japanese Ah symbol.
That would be fresh

Mostly men wear these.

Having volunteered at a monastery, I;ve mostly seen these big beads worn by worker monks (of course, not the 108-strand which spans the whole body, but an 18 or 27 bead strand long enough to wear over the head but short enough that it can be stuffed into deep pockets.)

These are heavy duty beads, which don't break easily when a monk does construction, farming or wielding work. (compared to dainty pearls or crystals that could be crushed under pressure.)

I think it's meant to symbolize the "heaviness" of human suffering, etc.

Urgh, leave it to a middle-aged white guy to turn something into a tacky fashion statement. (Refering to the picture above... "Look at me, I'm wearing cool Asian-y outfits because I'm just sooooo unique....") :P (Sorry! I know I'm being judgmental, I really shouldn't be!)

It's true--we get awarded beads for street fighting.

You have to be careful to pull them out slowly, one at a time.
