winning the lottery...???
Re: winning the lottery...???
I think his point was that he never once managed to win a sum the savings account couldn't pay out.
Re: winning the lottery...???
Right but someone always wins. What if that ends up being you? Looks like a possible suicide scenario to me.
Although many individuals in this age appear to be merely indulging their worldly desires, one does not have the capacity to judge them, so it is best to train in pure vision.

Why suicide?
I used Bitcoins back in 2013/2014. I didn't hold any though. A pity, but I don't feel like it's worth suicide.

1) You are assuming that the Buddhas act as celestial favour granters that can overide Karma.
2) You are assuming that winning the lottery would be an unmixed positive experience which will result in good outcomes all round.
The evidence is actually that many big lottery winners say that it ruined their lives in various ways...As David says above.
I don't think winning the lottery is karmic.

I mean the number drawn is not a result of karma.
There are no predestined lottery winners.

Wisdom if discernment:
1) a lot of forum members here wish they had more money
2) buddhism considers wish (in this context) to be a poison
The question: can you incorporate wishing for riches on the path (4th noble truth)? Can that be balanced with the wisdom of accomplishment? Real accomplishment comes from ethics meditation and wisdom.

'buddhism' says no such thing. 'buddhism' is concerned with motivation. It is motivation that drives karma. There might be many reasons for wanting more money..some positive, some negative, and some neutral.

The fact that you associate karma vipaka with predestination betrays the fact that you really need to study what karma is/means in Buddhism.

Agreed about motivation. But i disagree about the basic tenants/directions of Buddhism in this regard. No need for quotes, Buddhism is a well kown word religion. Are there not identified 3 poisons of human existance in Buddhism? Is not one of them desire?
This is/should be "picking low hanging fruit". Sure the exceptions are desire for helping others to be stabley happy or other things Buddhism supports. But even there the theme is acceptance of everything rsther than longing for something....
Enter Lottery, the theme there is pining away in stress hoping to win, next time, next time. In Buddhism what we do over and over is wash the floor!!!!!! ))))) you know why Simon? So you get tired of it, and give up on this human delusion/obscuration/attstchment to cicular
existance )))) not tired of it yer? Ok, buy another ticket.....

The author explains some illnesses and some events have more to do with luck, chance, and probability than karma.

I think everything has a connection to karma, but the isolated event of drawing a bingo number is chance.

Neither do I assume that I know anything about the motives of those that do.
Nor do I think that I am in a position to lecture others about the way they live.

Re: winning the lottery...???
Yeah I'm really exagerrating. But still imagine winning millions had you actually bought a ticket. Doubt it's pleasant... Also it might not be the same for us who aren't really serious about stuff like this and people who are regular gamblers.
I do vaguely remember reading a story years ago, I think it happened in the UK, how someone "won" but didn't, I think he bought the same numbers every time and then once they were the winning numbers, only it turned out he actually forgot to buy a new ticket and had the old one which wasn't valid for the new round and killed himself. Maybe Simon can recollect something.
I actually never check expired lottery tickets and just throw them away. Because I play loto from time to time and sometimes forget I bought a ticket haha. The most I won was about 20 €, my "investments" are probably thirty times as much. My late grandfather though had some success, he won about 400 € once (back when we didn't have the € yet and that was a lot of money) and another time a dishwasher and some other small winnings.

Re: winning the lottery...???
My dad was a big time lotto player, much more than I am. His biggest win was 10,000 dollars back in the 80s. That was a lot in those days and he used that for a down payment on a house. I hope to beat that record.

Well, in any case, I heard that a pilgrimage to Pol Pot's grave seems to dramatically improve one's chances:

"Cambodians in the area, he says, have won an unusual number of lotteries, prompting Thais to come across the border and beseech Pol Pot to reveal winning numbers in their dreams."

Re: winning the lottery...???
someone invented a kind of lottery for "basic income" in Germany.
Basic income is one of the political demands of left-wing parties that are very controversially discussed
here as the pay-gap gets bigger and bigger in wealthy poor old Germany.
if you win you get about 1000 Euros basic income for 12 months. In order
to participate you only have to register.
https://www.mein-grundeinkommen.de
I think they are non-profit, very young folks. No buddhists. no political party.
kind of fun acitivists, as far as I can see.
Surprisingly a lot of people pay into thAT account, although only some
people have the chance to win. They broadcast the drawings in real time, once or twice a month.
So far about 80,000 people have financed 132 of those basic incomes.
Makes sense to me, even if I do not win myself.
