Assisted Suicide and euthanasia: Non-Buddhist views

Post by Nicholas Weeks »

Moved from the original topic which can be found here.

Pattern of abuse of euthanasia seen in pioneering Netherlands:

“Starting from 2007, the numbers increased suddenly,” Boer said. “It was as if the Dutch people needed to get used to the idea of an organised death. I know lots of people who now say that there is only one way they want to die and that’s through injection. It is getting too normal.”
“In the beginning, 98% of cases were terminally ill patients with perhaps days to live. That’s now down to 70%.

Do not be hasty accepting a fatal diagnosis, always get a 2nd or 3rd opinion:

"Things are going to slide - slide in all directions
Won't be nothing - nothing you can measure any more
The blizzard - the blizzard of the world has crossed the threshold and its overturned the order of the soul."
-Leonard Cohen
There is no suffering to be severed. Ignorance and klesas are indivisible from bodhi. There is no cause of suffering to be abandoned. Since extremes and the false are the Middle and genuine, there is no path to be practiced. Samsara is nirvana. No severance achieved. No suffering nor its cause. No path, no end. There is no transcendent realm; there is only the one true aspect. There is nothing separate from the true aspect.

The author of the blog in the OP is a Canadian and devout Catholic and is coming at it from a perspective where RCC doctrine is being violated. He is apparently also had a rough personal time with the suicide of his sister-in-law.

I know a number of people in the Netherlands and they think his view of the situation there is quite odd.
"Knowledge is as infinite as the stars in the sky;
There is no end to all the subjects one could study.
It is better to grasp straight away their very essence--
The unchanging fortress of the Dharmakaya."

Euthanizing children just hits me in the gut the wrong way. I understand there may be a very rational way to approach it.

But I'm also deeply uncomfortable with abortion and the death penalty, so to an extent, my views parallel the views of devout Catholics.

The materialist approach that rationalizes euthanasia/assisted suicide is deeply troubling to me. Normalizing this option makes me uncomfortable.
