Tashi delek,

he Menri Ling Sorig Bhum-bzhi Medical College (MSBMC) was founded on 14th May 2014 and it is located at Dolanji Village near Solan, Himachal Pradesh.

This college was established under the vision of His Eminence 33rd Gyalwa Menri Trizin to preserve, promote and develop the Sorig Bum-bZhi medical practice and is fully managed by Yungdrung Bön Monastic Center a registered society in Himachal Pradesh. Currently, there are 2 medical teachers, one language teacher with total 15 students studying in the college.

Tashi delek,

Sangye Khandro is studying Tibetan Medicine at the MSBMC in Dolanji.
It is the Medicine Faculty which belong to the Menri Monastery.
Men ri = Medicine Mountain.

Sometimes Sangye Khandro gives some glimpses about her study /work.
But like all Tibetan Amchis and students , they don´t like to be the moderator of the Tibetan Medicine page here aboard, guess that has a special reason for all of them.........

WHY TIBETAN MEDICINE-PILLS NEED TO TAKE WITH BOILED WARM WATER: INTROSPECTION

TTM- Traditional Tibetan Medicine, officially known as ‘sowa rigpa’, is one of the rare, effective and unique ancient medical system that serving humanity since from 2000 years ago and still serving every corner to meet with the people who are needy and helpless from modern or conventional medicine. Focusing more on the relationship between body and mind, it holds unique way of treating the diseases by implementing holistic approach.

Generally, there is different way of treatment in TTM, to be brief, medicine, external therapy, diet and lifestyle, to name some kind of medicine, we have Medicinal Decoction, medicinal Powder, Medicinal Pills, Medicinal Paste, Medicinal Butter, etc. Particularly, the medicinal pills, which the Tibetan physician prescribes mostly in every corner Branch clinic, one must know ins and out of TTM pills.

1- what is the reason behind the making it in the shape of rounded pill?

The logic behind the making round pill is that to keep its effectiveness intact for longer time, also to protect from moisture, and the very important logic is on therapeutic base, if we ingest the pills through mouth, it will remain longer time in the stomach or/and intestine, means, it take longer time to dissolve in the stomach and gradually it melt down and work slowly to root out the diseases. Hence, it works very well for chronic diseases such as Arthritis, any kind of stomach related chronic disease, metabolic disorder and many more.

2- why it has to be crush before taking it ?

You might get the dilemma stage of mind after reading this question, that, first make the medicinal powder pill and then again crush it and make powder to take. That is totally out of the logic and Medical Text also don’t recommend this. It is the rumor that spread in the community and people are following that thing.

The right thing that Medical Text recommend is, if physicians prescribe you a pills, you have to ingest that whole pill without crushing it, doing so will yield more benefits. But practically, due to some circumstances like regurgitation of pills, uncomfortable to swallow and many inconvenient, one must crush it to get few pieces, not powder. Note: crush to get few pieces not powder.

If you make powder again, it will turn to other form of medicine, i.e. Medicinal powder and it will be less effective.

3- why it has to be taken with boiled warm water?

One more important thing about Tibetan Medicine is that to take with boiled warm water not Hot water. TTM physician always give focus more on digestive heat, because Medical Text clearly says that “one who master on keeping good digestive heat, is called a great physician”. By this reason, the TTM pills should take with boiled warm water or boiled Luke warm water.

Also, TTM pills are made up of raw herbs without converting it into other form, specifically with no synthetic chemicals. Hence, it is not water-soluble, it needs to get digest by one who consume it, so taking with boiled warm water helps to dissolve and digest well. Therefore, TTM physician always recommend their clients or patients to take pills with boiled warm water.

One more important thing about the boiled warm water. What is mean by boiled warm water? – I’ll tell you what most people do to get warm water.

1) usually people misunderstood boiled warm water with ‘hot water’, TTM do not recommend taking pills with hot water. Rather, recently some research paper claiming that drinking hot beverages or tea will cause oral or throats cancer.

2) also, people usually heat the water to get water just above the room temperature. This is also one wrong doing and it called ‘chhutreb’ from TTM, which contain micro-organism.

3) Also, what people do is, they first boil the water quite well and if they are in short of time to take medicine, they just mix cold water to become Luke/mild warm and then consume it. That is also same as chhutreb.

So, what you should do and what Medical Text recommend is, boil the water till the bubbles stop emerging from the bottom of vessels, then keep it for while, after it gets Luke warm is a perfect boiled warm water, but in some circumstances it needs to take with cold/normal water, such as for excess tripa disorder, the pills have to take with cold water, also in some other cases where the pills should consume with chilled water, iced water.

So, what is the take home message is that, crush the pills to get few pieces not into powder and consume it with boiled warm water, appropriately and in accordance with Doctor’s recommendations.

THE BÖNPO MENDRUP RITUAL PRACTICE

By: Anna Sehnalova

.
Historically, the practice of the extended Bönpo mendrup ritua lin the monastic setting used to be restricted to a single performance in the life of each Abbot of Tashi Menri monastery the leading monastery of Bön

The interval between performances is said to have averaged around 60 years. Nowadays, the practice is much more frequent due to increasing (and global) sponsorship and facilitated logistics for the purchase of ther equired medicinal ingredients an dsubstances. It particularly flourishes in the exile, in the substitute Tashi Menri monastery (founded1969) in Himachal Pradesh,India, and the second most prominent exile monastery,Triten Norbutse initiated in 1986 ,founded 1992) in Kathmandu,Nepal.

All Bönpo mendrup rituals are dedicated to a specific tutelary deity, yidam, Sanskrit: iṣṭa-devatā) and the deity’s specific cycle of teachings. Different teaching lineages14 of the Bonpos have their own mendrup rituals of different yidam deities, i.e., of particular and often individually attributed tantric deities to be meditated upon in order toguide the adepts to awakening. For the prevailing Bönpo Dru (Bru,also spelled Gru,’Bru, ’Gru) lineage, inherently tied to the Menri monastery, the two main yidams for a mendrup ritual are the deities:

Trowo Tsochok Khagying (Khro bo gtso mchog mkha’ ’gying), “Wrathful One, Supreme Lord Towering the Sky”, and Purwa (Phur ba, Sanskrit: kīla), “Dagger.”

Medicinal empowerment (sman dbang) of the peaceful and wrathful deities (zhi tro, zhi khro), specifically connected to one of the respective wrathful yidams in each case, is integral for the practice. The mendrup particularly examined in this article is the one dedicated to Trowo Tsochok Khagying, called “the light-swirled mendrup” (sman sgrub ’od zer ’khyil ba).

Within the Bönpo tradition, the big monastic performances of mendrup have become synonymous with the designation drupchen(sgrubchen),which generally denotes “a Major Practice session or intensive communal tantric practice focused on attaining realisation, held over a number of days, and typically requiring a large team of lamas and ritualists as the principal practitioners. The drupchen practice can function without a mendrup, but for the main monasteries of Bön the two have become conflated to a certain extent. The word drupchen is thus, and especially in colloquial expression for the Bönpos, usually understood to refer to elaborate mendrup monastic celebrations, and differentiates them from minor mendrup rites conducted yearly or at another higher frequency, or in village settings. The following descriptions of the contemporary execution of mendrup are primarily based on the last exile performance in Triten Norbutse monastery in Kathmandu in 2012, supplemented by the ritual’s scriptures and other sources.

The event represented “the light-swirled mendrup” of the deity Trowo Tsochok Khagying.

The mendrup ceremony is very complicated and is divided into 3 main phases by the Bönpos:
1. Preliminary activities (sngon ’gro) of purifications, enhancing auspiciousness and creating suitable conditions for the major practice,gathering the prescribed substances, which count over a hundred, and compounding the mendrup medicine;
2. The central activities of accomplishing and empowering the medicine,and attaining spiritual accomplishments in a meditational state upon Trowo Tsochok Khagying and the peaceful and wrathful deities;
3. The final medicinal empowerment (sman dbang), along with an empowerment for long life (tshes grub gyi dbang) and the mendrup medicine distribution.

The mendrup act itself is constituted of the middle and longest part and the concluding empowerments. This second section lasts no less than fifteen days, during which chanting cannot cease and the main mendrup“medicinal mantra,” mendzap (sman ’dzab), resonates many times.

Various other mantras, special invocations, dances, hand gestures, and music and melodies accompany the extensivetexts’recitations. Twenty-four selected monks receive exclusive training prior to each enactment to enable its performance. The focus and material centre of the whole ritual is the medicine. It is placed in 9 vessels (bumpa,ga’u) and bags on and around the mandala (Tibetan: dkyil ’khor, Sanskrit: maṇḍala) of the ritual, enclosed and firmly sealed by cloth. The 9 vessels, one in the centre, 4 in the main and 4 in the intermediate cardinal points of the mandala, are prescribed to contain specially assorted medicines of specific properties.

Their compounding follows a precise recipe in the ritual’s texts, for which a person knowledgeable in medical pharmaceutics (following the Tibetan Sowa rigpa medical tradition) has to be put in charge. The ritual requires that mixed raw ingredients undergo the first half of the second phase of the ritual, before being ground to pursue the next stage of bestowing accomplishments (the second half of the second phase). For the sake of time and easier production, almost all of the mendrup medicine is nowadays powdered mechanically well in advance, and only apart of the medicinal vessels on the mandala contain unprocessed ingredients at the beginning of the ritual.

These are ground manually by pestle and mortar at the given middle phase of the celebration. At this moment, the ground and unground ingredients are carefully mixed. Afterwards, the medicine is returned on to and around the mandala, and the ritual continues. The central medicinal container is on the mandala, accompanied by the medicinal yeast papta (phabsgta’,alsosmanphabs), the“fermenting agent”of the whole ritual and its medicine. It is also a medicinal mixture believed to come from deities and old masters, bringing their powers and assuring the efficacy of the ritual.

From the centre of the mandala, a “spell cord” (byang thag, gzungs thag, leads to the elevated seats of the two presiding monks, bound to the Bönpo ritual sceptre (chag shing). The thread helps to concentrate and navigate the powers of the deities on the mandala and the medicine.
The produced medicine is considered extraordinarily efficacious. Up to 1000 people arrived at Triten Norbutse to receive the medicine and the final empowerment. The compound is taken orally, and various rules apply to its consumption and preservation. It is kept in monasteries and families for decades as a unique blessing helping to achieve awakening, and a drug for any disease, illness or disorder. It is perceived to work for all beings and the environment.

transmission and continuation of the Bönpo mendrup ritual. According to contemporary Bönpos’ narratives, the mendrup of Trowo Tsochok Khagying originates with the Primordial Buddha, Küntu Zangpo. He is believed to have bestowed the ritual’s practice and expertise to the deity Shenlha Ökar (gShenlha’oddkar), who then taught it to the famous Bönpo master Drenpa Namkha (Dran pa nam mkha’, 8th century).

Drenpa Namkha is understood to have concealed the text (along with many others) during a time of persecution of Bön, as a treasure (gter ma) to be rediscovered in more favourable times. During the 11th and 12th centuries, the treasure revealers Shenchen Luga (gShen chen klu dga’, 996–1035), and also Rindzin Chenpo Gyermi Nyiö (Rig ’dzin chen po gyer mi nyi ’od, 11th –12th century) or Matön Sindzin (rMa ston srin ’dzin, aka Matön Söldzin, rMaston srol’dzin,b.1092) unearthed the mendrup texts as well as the essential “fermenting agent” papta, considered the medicinal core of the mendrup

Thus, both the ritual’s text and its old medicine are perceived as treasures of divine origin.
