Passing of HH Lungtok Tenpai Nyima Rinpoche

Post by mutsuk »

I just received the sad news from JLA a minute ago that HH the 33rd Menri Tridzin, Lungtok Tenpai Nyima Rinpoche, passed away earlier today. He was one of the greatest Bön teacher from the (pre-exile) older generation and one of the most knowledgeable Dzogchen masters in the history of Bön. It is of utmost importance to focalize on Guru-Yoga right now and in the forthcoming weeks.

I didn't have any connection with him, however losing such master is always sad.
“Observing samaya involves to remain inseparable from the union of wisdom and compassion at all times, to sustain mindfulness, and to put into practice the guru’s instructions”. Garchen Rinpoche

For those who do virtuous actions,
goodness is what comes to pass.
For those who do non-virtuous actions,
that becomes suffering indeed.

Oh. :namaste: I am very, very thankful to him for the precious teachings I have received with his consent and support from some of his students.

Just heard the difficult news, what a blessing he has been.

A book had been published earlier this year, in June, containing tens and tens of praises, prayers and supplications addressed to HH the Menri Abbot.
The table of contents can be seen here :

This video statement from the Lama who is Yongzin Rinpoche's successor, sorry don't know his name, is in Tibetan only and no translation available. Would someone please listen to it and give us the gist of what he has said?

This is Lopön Trinley Nyima Rinpoche, the renown Lopon of Menri , Dolanji. I can't get the whole statement as my internet connexion is low and the video keeps on buffering, but in the part I've been able to listen to, he says that he's been asked by many people to make a statement. So he basically says the Mind of the 33rd Menri Tridzin Rinpoche has dissolved into Absolute Space (bon dbyings). He also thanks the masters who have sent messages of condolances, such as the Karmapa, Sakya Tridzin, and other high Bon lamas and officials from Tibet. I can't access the rest for the time being.

"Yesterday (18th Sept.), His Holiness the 33rd Menri Trizin Rinpoche has ended (ཐུགས་དམ་གྲོལ།) the state of “Thugdham” meditation, in which he remained for five days since he entered into Nirvana (ཞི་བར་གཤེགས།) on 14th September. As a sign of ending his meditation, his head has slightly been leaned forward in front of his chest.
Thereafter, His Eminence Menri Ponlob Rinpoche, His Eminence Khenpo Tenpa Yungdrung Rinpoche and some other high Lamas began chanting of holy verses, “Purification of Holy Bodily Remain” (གདུང་ཁྲུས།). At that time, Rinpoche’s main assistants Chongtul Rinpoche, Lama Rinchen Tsabtsa, Geshe Dawa Namgyal and Lama Sangye Negi bathed the precious bodily remains of His Holiness.
The seed syllables (གནས་ཡིག) of peaceful and wrathful deities ritual are sticked on all essential parts of his body. Then the body was wrapped in pure white cloth, and was dressed up with his complete monk robs. In order to allow the visitors to venerate it as their support of offering and prayer, the holy remain of His Holiness is placed in a divine-chamber (གསས་ཁང་) and it will be kept for public viewing until the 2nd October. At the early morning at 5:30am on 2nd October, the cremation ceremony following the Kunrig (ཀུན་རིག་ལས་བཞི་རྒྱུན་ལྔ།) ritual will be carried out by all the monks at Menri monastery in Dolanji.
This will be a very special opportunity for all his spiritual students and followers to receive his last blessing and pay him the most respectful farewell.

Many thanks for this Lhasa!

The old tradition Menri Ponlob talks about consists in writing the names of all Bönpo Geshes on individual pieces of paper and have these hidden inside small balls of tsampa. All these balls are then put inside a vase which is shaken by an elder monk until two or three balls come out. Then all the other balls are removed and the 2 or 3 ones that came out are placed inside the vase. The vase is shaken again and the first ball coming out is considered to be that of the new abbot. This is regarded as the decision of the Protectors and this is exactly like this that the 33rd Abbot himself was chosen.
