The details of the story do not occur in the corpus of works revealed by Khöpung Lodrö Thokme.

We have actually only 3 works related to the form of Welkhyung Marpo (Red Wrathful Garuda) who is actually depicted as Khyungphur Marpo (Red Garuda-Phurpa) :

1. The Main Treatise of Practice of Welkhyung Marpo (dBal khyung dmar po'is grub gzhung),
2. The Fulfillment Ritual of Welkhyung Marpo (dBal phyung dmar po'i skong ba) and
3. The Guidance and Initiation of Yidam Welkhyung Marpo, known as the Swift Arising of Blessings (Yi dam dbal khyung dmar po'i dbang khrid byin rlabs myur byung).

- The first is a work of Menri Abbot Khenchen Sherab Gongyel who elaborated this long work based on previous revelations by Khöpung Lodrö Thokme and "side notes" compiled by Nyamme Sherab Gyeltsen. The work was composed in Menri.
- The second is a work by Khöpung Lodrö Thokme
- The third is by an Abbot known as Nyi-zer.

The oral transmission coming with the first text simply says that Tönpa Shenrab taught this practice to Takla Mebar in order to subjugate Nagas and other entities creating obstacles and illnesses.

There is a double lineage of transmission.
Usually, Garuda is associated with Yidam Welse Ngampa but this is actually for other forms of Garuda and therefore the story is different.

===========

Black Garuda (Welkhyung Nakpo) is associated to Welse Ngampa: he is an emanation of Welse himself.
The cycle of the Black Garuda also has texts revealed or redacted by Khöpung Lodrö Thokme and others. The lineage of transmission is different from that of the Red Garuda.
