Drenpa Namkha and Vairotsana

Post by kalden yungdrung » Mon Jun 10, 2019 10:18 pm

Tashi delek,

In Bön we can see via textual sources / terma, that Garab Dorje is connected to Bön Dzogchen
Drepa Namkha plays a crucial role here.
Taphiritsa is also an emanation of Drenpa Namkha.

There is also later textual evidence which connects Garab Dorje with Bönpo Dzogchen.

For example, in the text the Golden Spoon rediscovered by the great Tertön Yungdrung Lingpa we read:

Yairotsana was sitting in the Tiger's Nest in Bhutan.
When he was practising in the cave there one night, the cave became filled with light, the earth trembled and emitted sounds like a dragon roaring. Vairotsana looked in front of him and in a rainbow circle he saw Drenpa Namkha with his 2 sons; they appeared directly to him

Drenpa Namkha was white in colour and decorated with the 6 bone ornaments.
In his right hand he was holding up a swastika which was spinning by his head.
In his left hand he was holding a skull cup filled with blood.
Under his arm he was holding a trident decorated with semiprecious and precious stones as well as with various silk drapes. He was in a dancing posture, and he was moving.

His son, Tsewang Rigdzin, was a darkish white colour.
All his ornaments and decorations were perfect and Vairotsana saw him clearly. He felt devotion to him at that time. This teaching was written in gold and kept inside a gold reliquary box.

Drenpa Narnkha touched Vairotsana's forehead, neck and chest with it and gave him the 4 empowerments.
He gave him the 3 important points of teaching and also advice.

He said:
'Ho!
Boy of awareness, spiritual son! Do it be deluded! Listen to me!
I am Garab Dorje,
I am Drenpa Namkha
I am Lhagod Thoglebar,
I am Namkha Yungdrung,
I am also Drugse
Chemchog Kagying.
I show a Bönku form.
To whoever is devoted to me, I will appear as Sambhogakaya,
Impure beings will see me as Nirmanakaya.
I am the King of the Quintessence of the Three Kayas.
I am also the Free Life, Lachen Drenpa, the great lama of Namkha.

This is the essence of the Ultimate Vehicle of Bon.
This is the drops of nectar from the golden spoon.
Practise and then hide this as a treasure.'
And then he gave the teachings to Vairotsana. Vairotsana hid it in the Tiger's Nest.
Tapihritsa is also said to have been one of the emanations of Drenpa Namkha so this brings us back to Zhang Zhung Nyengyud Dzogchen.

IN ADDITION.

Tashi delek,

Bönpos agree / are convinced, that Zhang Zhung Garab Dorje and Nyingma Garab Dorje are one and the same person.
Guess therefore we can say / assume Kuntu Zangpo = Samantabhadra

Several leading scholars of Bön such as.

- Yongdzin Lopon Tenzin Namdak Rinpoche
- Samten G. Karmay
- John M. Reynolds,

have suggested that this Master Zhang Zhung Garab Dorje, might be identical with Garab Dorje of the Nyingma Dzogchen lineage.

It may be then, that both Tibetan lineages of Dzogchen have a single root not only in terms of their ultimate source, Bönku/Dharmakaya, but also in terms of lineage.

Both lineages came from Central Asia to Tibet via different countries, with the Nyingma lineage tracing its origin to Oddiyana and the Bönpo lineage coming to Tibet from Zhang Zhung.

Oddiyana and Zhang Zhung were neighbouring countries and their borders were vague, not like in our modern times. Several Bönpo Drubthob Mahasiddhas such as:

- Drenpa Namkha
- Tsewang Rigdzin
- Perna Thongdröl

and others travelled back and forth between Zhang Zhung and Oddiyana; furthermore there is a Cycle of Indian Bön.

So Garab Dorje and Zhang Zhung Garab may indeed be the same person. This hypothesis is further supported by the fact that Bönpo and Nyingma Dzogchen do not differ in terms of their base, path, view, or result. All this, then, suggests a common source.

This is what Drenpa Namkha himself said:

"ལྔ་བརྒྱའི་དུས་སུ་ང་ལ་གསོལ་བ་ཐོབ།
NGA GYAI DÜ SU NGA LA SOL WA THOB/
‘Pray to me with devotion in the time of Kali Yuga;

ང་ནི་བྱིན་རློབས་དགུ་འགྱུར་དེ་དུས་ཆེ།
NGA NI JYIN LAB GU GYUR DE DÜ CHE/
The power of my blessings will increase nine-fold at that time.

དུས་བཟང་རྣམས་ལ་བོད་ཁམས་ཡང་ཡང་ཉུལ།
DÜ ZANG NAM LA BÖ KHAM YANG YANG NYUL/
I will often come to the realm of Tibet on the special days.

ལས་ཅན་འགའ་ལ་ཞལ་སྟོན་བོན་ཡང་གསུངས།
LE CHÄN GA LA ZHAL TÖN BÖN YANG SUNG
To some qualified ones I will also show my face and teach Bön."

"Once a person is caught by belief in a doctrine, he loses all his freedom. When one becomes dogmatic, he believes his doctrine is the only truth
and that all other doctrines are heresy. Disputes and conflicts all arise from narrow views. They can extend endlessly, wasting precious time and
sometimes even leading to war. Attachment to views is the greatest impediment to the spiritual path. Bound to narrow views, one becomes so
entangled that it is no longer possible to let the door of truth open."

"If the aspiration for enlightenment is your motivation in coming to see me, there is no remedy except meditative practice. I, too, will only practice." - Zurpoche Sakya Jungne

IN ADDITION:

In the Bön Spiritual Tradition, Tapihritsa, Drenpa Namkha and Tsewang Rigdzin have manifested the body of the great transfer.

This means its the same Rainbow Body quality that is ascribed to Guru Rinpoche.

We know 4 Rainbow Bodies:

- The body of the great transfer / the youthful vase body
- The great rainbow body
- The small rainbow body
- The body of the small transfer .
