Dharamsala, April 29 - The erstwhile lesser known sect of the Tibetan Buddhism, known as the Jonang tradition inaugurated its first office here in Dharamasla as ‘Jonang Well Being Association in India’. The event was attended by Kalon for religious affairs Ven Tsering Phuntsok, Tibetan parliament’s Deputy Speaker Dolma Gyari , the President of the Association Tsangyang Gyatso, the Association’s advisor Woeser Rinpoche and representatives from various NGOs and governmental officials.

Jonang, believed to be the fifth living tradition of Tibetan Buddhism is currently not a popular knowledge to people outside Tibet, especially in India.

Jonang Well Being Association aims to revive and spread awareness about this school of Tibetan Buddhism whose origin could be traced back to as early as 12thcentury and was thought to have become extinct over the course of time. In this effort, it seeks to contribute more opportunities to the masses to study the Jonang tradition which has only recently begun spreading its teachings in countries like Australia, India (Sikkim) and Nepal. It promises to create platforms for discussions, to publish newsletters and information on the origin and history of Jonang school to avail its teachings to people across the world.

Following the narration of the history of Jonang tradition by Mr Tsangyang Gyatso , Mrs Gyari pointed out that the recognition of Jonang as the fifth sect of Tibetan Buddhism by the exile government in India is currently underway, albeit for the last 4 to 5 years. Kalon Ven Tsering Phuntsok encouraged the association to primarily fulfill its aims and objectives, thereby laying more emphasis on the success of preservation and revival of the Jonang tradition.

The recent Tenshug or Long Life prayer ceremony for the Dalai Lama was jointly conducted by the Dharamsala Tibetan community centre and Jonang tradition.
