"heart of enlightenment"

Post by Nicholas Weeks »

Twice in Khunu Lama's Praise of Bodhicitta - verses 29 & 271 - these words appear.

What do they refer to - buddhahood or great compassion or ???

Cannot get the Tibetan to display here nor is the Attachment function available. Here is the English for verse 29:
29
From now until the heart of enlightenment,
I pray to the Guru Triple Gem to have
such an aspiration as "may I not be separated from bodhicitta,"
and to be blessed [to make such a prayer].
Maybe someone has the actual book to refer to the Tibetan.

Here is a link to the book, which has Tibetan on facing pages:

I think I this context, “heart” means “core” in the sense of “ultimate”, like in the expression “getting to the heart of the matter”. Getting to where you cannot go any further. You could say “final enlightenment” or complete realization of Buddhahood.
Be kind.

Thanks, you may be right, but prefer the view of someone who understands Tibetan.

It is a mistranslation of BodhimaNDa (byang chub snying po) which actually refers to the seat (maNDa) of awakening.

Thank you Malcolm
So bodhimanda means a place in awareness very close to buddhahood, for high bodhisattvas, 8-10 stages are seated there too, in addition to Buddhas?

It means may I never lose bodhicitta until I am seated on the seat of buddhahood. Only a buddha can sit on the bodhimanda.
