What does 所 mean in Classical Chinese? I encounter this character a lot, and I know it is a grammatical function, but what are your explanations?
Then, the monks uttered this gāthā:

These bodies are like foam.
Them being frail, who can rejoice in them?
The Buddha attained the vajra-body.
Still, it becomes inconstant and ruined.
The many Buddhas are vajra-entities.
All are also subject to inconstancy.
Quickly ended, like melting snow --
how could things be different?

The Buddha passed into parinirvāṇa afterward.

This is from the /kangxi zidian/ 康熙字典 「所」entry:

- according to [說文] (an ancient etymology/dictionary book) this word originally refers to the sound of chopping trees. That is why there is the 「斤」, axe.
However, in most case in which the word is not used for mere grammatical functional purpose, its meaning is 'place, building, institution' and it often appears with 處: 「處所」. In the 6th Patriarch's Platform Sutra, it's recorded: 「妄無處所、著者是妄」 "delusion is not (to be observed/seen) in any place, the very attachment, is delusion).

suŏ
(2) a particle used before a verb to nominalise it; in Classical Chinese, the compound 所 + verb usually stands for the direct object: e.g. 所念 what one thinks, 所生 what is born, 所有 what one has; however in Buddhist texts, this compound denotes an action as well: e.g. 所念 the act of thinking, 所念惡 the act of thinking of evil, 所生 production, 所有existence.#

The grammatical function of 所 is much like a pronoun. It stands in for the object of the verb it precedes.

王見之 -> 王所見
"The king sees it" -> "the king 所 sees"
The latter expression means "(that which) the king sees".
The first sentence is a complete sentence, the second is a noun phrase.

所 denotes an object (not the subject). It is not a passive, but it often gets translated into English as an (awkward) passive.
I.e., the characters above could be translated "that which is seen by the king."
But speaking more rigorously, 所 just nominalizes the sentence in which it occurs.

己所不欲,勿施於人。(Good thinking from Confucius.)
"What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others."
Literally: "self 所 no want, do not apply to people."

Before 所 was applied to the first sentence above, it might have looked like this:
己不欲X(where X is your favorite object)
"self does not want (object)"

You can extend this usage to more abstract situations, e.g., 所有.
These two characters form a known that literally means "that which exists" or "that which one has" depending on context.
However in most cases "that which exists" just means "everything."
(See the phrase from the Diamond Sutra, 凡所有相皆是虛妄.
Word by word, 凡 means "for all which", 所有 "all" 相 either refers to "outward appearance" or "perception of a phenomenon."
皆 is "all", 是 is either "to be" or a demonstrative "this", 虛 "empty", 妄 "delusion.")

This usage of 所 is very common in Buddhism to express all kinds of abstract concepts.
Often in Chan Buddhism, you will see the terms 能 and 所 referring to the subject and object of cognition.
能 means ability, or "can." As a noun it means "that which can (cognitate)", i.e., the mind.
所 refers to the object of the mind. It's a catch-all abbreviation for all objects.
It also appears all the time in technical terms like 所緣境 "that referent to which the mind connects," or the mental object of meditation.

Finally, the most common "regular" use for 所 is "place." A previous post cited the Platform Sutra:
"妄無處所、著者是妄"
Literally, "delusion" "has no" "dwell" "place", "attach" "-er" "to be" "delusion"
Hopefully you can see why this sentence would then mean "delusion is not (to be observed/seen) in any place, the very attachment, is delusion."
(The 者 here is another important grammatical particle, which nominalizes a verb in the opposite way from 所. 1) it attaches to the end of the verb (or verb phrase), the opposite of 所. 2) it nominalizes the subject of the verb, not the object. 著者 means "the thing that attaches" not "that which is attached".)
