Questions about Marga

Post by Westy »

Greetings all :) I have two questions regarding Marga:

1. How would you write marga in Tibetan script?

2. Is it correct to use Marga on its own as a word, to mean "the path" (meaning to enlightenment) without the designations that usually come before it? That is, does it still have meaning as a standalone word?

With many thanks in advance

1. ལམ་ lam as in ཐར་ལམ་ thar lam ("path of liberation") or ལམ་འབྲས་ lam 'bras ("the path and its fruition/result").

2. Not sure about in Sanskrit (would be interested to know this myself, or how best to back-translate thar lam into Sanskrit for that matter). In Tibetan I've mostly seen it as thar lam rather than simply lam.

Perhaps folks such as Malcolm and conebeckham could chime in...

"The Sutras, Tantras, and Philosophical Scriptures are great in number. However life is short, and intelligence is limited, so it's hard to cover them completely. You may know a lot, but if you don't put it into practice, it's like dying of thirst on the shore of a great lake. Likewise, a common corpse is found in the bed of a great scholar." ~ Karma Chagme
