Samadhi

Post by sangyey »

Hello,

Is Samadhi a Pali word or a Sanskrit word?

If it is a Sanskrit word is it different than Dhyana?

Thank you.

Sanskrit and Pali being both indic languages, they have a lot in common.

Samadhi is used in both. As for its relationship to Dhyana (Skt.) / Jhana (P.), here is something very approximate:

Samadhi has a broader "scope" than Dhyana, which refers to specific meditative states (the 4 Dhyanas / Jhanas).

However, in some cases / tradition, Dhyana also has a broad meaning that does not restrict it to specific states.
