Buddhist Wisdom on Social Inequity in North America
The state of race and gender relations in the United States and Canada, particularly the U.S., appears to deteriorate despite earlier progress. Recent brutalities, hate group rallies, and revelations related to skin color or gender, demonstrate that exploitation and marginalization are on the rise. Both structural and subtle biases challenge communities and daily interactions. This diverse panel of Buddhists across North America will offer their observations, recommendations, and experientials sourced from Buddhist teachings for practical applications regarding racism, sexism, and their interrelations. Characterized more by diversity than unity Buddhism is really BuddhismS. The term “Buddhism” is a rather late designation created by Europeans and without precise analogies in classical Buddhist literature. While there may not be any uniform and speedy “Buddhist” answer to inequality, the spectrum of responses from members of a diverse MahaSangha, which is starting to burgeon in North America, may be enough sand as grist for your pearl in spiritual activism.
