Yuthok Nyingthig Ngon-dro Retreat
Saturday, Feb. 16 to Sunday, Feb. 24
At Boulder Valley Ngakpa House

The Yuthok Nyingthig is a cycle of terma (treasures) combining all the stages of Vajrayana Buddhism from ngon-dro to Dzogchen designed specifically for doctors, healers, and medical professionals of all kinds. Because medical professionals are busy treating patients, they typically cannot go into year-long or three-year-long retreat. However, Yuthok Yonten Gonpo, the founder of the Yuthok Nyingthig lineage, recognizing this, created a graduated series of sadhanas (spiritual practices) which can each be practiced in only a seven-day retreat and which can greatly help one become a better healer. As Ju Mipham has said, “Merely remembering You [Yuthok] is of greater benefit than months and years of exertion in other approach and accomplishment [sadhanas].” And, as Yuthok Yonten Gonpo Himself said, “By invoking [Me] for seven days, you will definitely be accepted [as My disciple/attain accomplishment].” This is a unique feature of the Yuthok Nyingthig and is based on the special blessings and power this system carries.

Dates: 6 PM, Sunday, Feb. 16 – 8-9 AM, Sunday, Feb. 24

Type of retreat: Non-residential. Participants will sleep at their own homes. However, participants need to promise not to watch TV, party, go to entertainments, listen to secular music, use the Internet, etc. in the evenings during the retreat. They need to keep doing the practice on their own at home in the evenings and/or read about ngon-dro.

We will practice "noble silence" during this retreat while at the retreat center. So no talking during breaks, breakfast, and lunch. In the evenings, people can talk as much as is necessary to family members. If there are problems, they may talk to the drub-pon (retreat leader) and they may ask questions during appropriate times.

Place: Boulder Valley Ngakpa House, 2539 Columbine Circle, Lafayette, 80026, just north of 95th & Arapahoe. This will be the third Yuthok Nyingthig ngon-dro retreat held at BVNH.

Qualifications: Anyone who wants to seriously study and practice the Yuthok Nyingthig. Participants do not have to have had the Yuthok Nyingthig empowerment (ngon-dro does not require empowerment), nor must they be a medical professional. If one has not yet formally taken refuge, this retreat includes taking refuge as an integral part (however, without the bestowal of a Dharma name or the cutting of hair).

Cost: $20 materials fee for handouts, diagrams, and pictures. $6 for one day’s candle offerings. Each participant is asked to offer the altar candles one day. (Checks should be made payable to Bob Flaws, not to Boulder Valley Ngakpa House.)

Offerings: Participant will need to bring tshog offerings for the beginning and ending tshogs. Other offerings for the altar in general (candles, flowers, fruits, canned or bottled drinks, alcoholic beverages, incense, etc.) are encouraged but not required. One of the main purposes of this retreat is the accumulation of merit.

Dana [offering] to the Teacher is traditional at the end of this kind of program. The amount of dana is up to each individual.

Practice accessories: Practice accessories necessary for this retreat include:

Mandala pan (https://potalagate.com/collections/mandala-offering), best you can afford

It does not allow one to do advanced practices within other lineages of Vajrayana Buddhism.

Lama Pema Chophel (a.k.a.Bob Flaws) has been a Vajrayana Buddhist for 49 years and has studied with more than 50 Gurus. His Yuthok Nyingthig Gurus include the late Trogawa Rinpoche, Dr. Nida Chenaktsang, and Tulku Yeshe Gyamtsho. Of his 49 years in the Dharma, 19 of those years were practicing ngon-dro, and he has specifically been authorized to teach ngon-dro by Terton Tashi Gyaltshen. Over the years, Lama Pema has done many, many retreats and attended many drub-chens. He was the first American cho-pon and the first American om-dze (for the Longchen Nyingthig Buddhist Soc. in NY beginning in 1970). Lama Pema has led three previous Yuthok Nyingthig seven-day retreats at Boulder Valley Ngakpa House. For the last eight years, he has spent most of his time in full-time practice and retreat.

As of this date, we have seven confirmed registrants for this retreat. So it is a definite "go." We still have three available spaces for anyone interested. (We can take up to 12, but I'd rather have a maximum of 10.) If so, please contact Rien Havens at [email protected].
