Lama Baasasuran in Los Angeles

Post by Nicholas Weeks »

On January 12th from 3-6pm we'll be hosting a Mongolian Lama of the Gelugpa tradition at the Los Angeles Theosophy Lodge. Lama Baasa will give a talk, accompanied by Vesna Wallace of UCSB. Entry to the talk is free of charge. There will be Spanish translation as well. We're all very excited to have the Lama here, and are hopeful many people will attend.

The talk will take place at Theosophy Hall, 245 West 33rd Street, Los Angeles, California 90007 USA

Brief introduction to Lama Baasasuran:
Baasa Lama comes from the Geluk tradition, but his monastery (Erdene Zuu) also historically had a Sakya lineage in the past. The Monastery is likely the earliest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia, and Lama Baasa has been its head Lama for the past 14 years.

Here's a wonderful NY Times article on his activities: https://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/20/arts ... onk20.html

He is very non-sectarian. He speaks basic English, enough to express his main ideas. Compassion and love are his basic teachings. He has established many programs for the poor people of his area—workshops of skillful living—and has established a program that allows them to make living by doing crafts, incl. programs for the blind, deaf, and mute, who are usually kept hidden at home by families (in these parts of Asia, families are often ashamed of them). He has built a dormitory for young monks and provides a good education for monks, has established a restaurant for the poor, etc. He teaches also many young lay people who are drawn to his style of teaching.
May all seek, find & follow the Path of Buddhas.
