Changes to the Terms of Service - inter school discussions

Post by Dan74 »

Dear Members,

We strive to improve Dharma Wheel in order to foster a better environment where practitioners of Mahayana and Vajrayana schools and interested people can have positive constructive exchanges. To this end we've made some changes to the ToS.

This is a multi-tradition Forum and one of the things many members value is the possibility of inter-school dialogue. However, such dialogue can sometimes touch a raw nerve or, worse, erode faith in one's practice. When members feel that their tradition is being denigrated, they may also feel unwelcome and leave. Most Mahayana traditions contain teachings that hold themselves to be superior in some way to the others. Members are entitled to discuss such teachings though as is always the case, there is the appropriate time and place, as well as the manner in which they are best discussed.

In the interest of supporting free constructive inter-school discussions but also providing shared space where no Mahayana practitioners feel their tradition is being devalued or disrespected, the following addition to the ToS has been introduced by the Staff:

No putting down of other traditions or elevating one above the other, except within the Forum of the tradition in which such teachings are taught. Alternatively Open Dharma is the place for inter-school debate. Further Academic Forum can be a place to discuss provenance of sutras and competing interpretations.
