transformation vs. self liberation

As Tantra often involves vows and samaya related to secret practice, this sub-forum has been created where Vajrayana practitioners can pose questions, and any of our members or staff can reply confidentially by PM.

transformation vs. self liberation

Post by Johnny Dangerous »

I see this often pointed out as a place of difference between the Tantric and Dzogchen views. I understand the "basics" of the difference in a theoretical sense, however...in Tantric instructions - which I guess would be Mahamudra by default (in person and stuff i've read),I read and hear lots of instructions about self-liberating thoughts, etc. also. So my question is for practitioners, what is the practical difference, rather than the theoretical one? Is it just that 'daily life' practice involves deity as sound etc. for a Tantrika, but not for a Dzogchenpa? Further, since lots of people do both practices, do people just pick one or the other to do at a given time? I know I can ask teachers this, I'm just curious to hear an explanation, feel free to PM.
