So I have a close connection to the Sakya lineage, I've taken teachings from some of it's bigger names, my core Dharma education comes from a Sakya Loppon, and I do one of their practices with a group regularly, probably will forever. Anyway, some of my closest connections are here. Soon I will have the opportunity to go deeper, but I have some reservations about doing so, so I thought maybe those who have spent some time might advise.
Basically, I feel like I am too much of a wild hippie to do the whole Sakya "program", despite me having these connections. It seems so graduated and all-inclusive, from the outside it often looks like an all-or-nothing deal. This, and the fact that I ended up with ChNN as a root guru, makes me feel like I simply won't have the investment in (for instance) doing Sakya Ngondro. Is there a supplemental value in engaging in Ngondro, for someone with my weird history, or is it really just a thing you should do if you one day want to do the Sakya HYT practices (which I don't really)?
I do plan on asking my teacher this, of course, though maybe with more polite verbiage;)
