The Noble Eightfold Path: The Way to End Suffering

Post by Dharma Flower »

I am currently reading this PDF of the Noble Eightfold Path by Bhikkhu Bodhi:

Rarely have I seen the path to enlightenment explained in such a clear, concise fashion. This is where the rubber meets the road.

Far from teaching a selfish enlightenment, Bhikkhu Bodhi's book emphasizes the essential importance of loving-kindness and compassion on the path to Nirvana.

Because he was a novice Mahayana monk before converting to Theravada, he's able to explain the Dharma in a way that all traditions can appreciate.

I find it weird that anyone would convert from Mahayana to Theravada, but I'll give it a read. thanks! :smile:

Thus shall ye think of all this fleeting world:
A star at dawn, a bubble in a stream;
A flash of lightning in a summer cloud,
A flickering lamp, a phantom, and a dream.

In the Buddha's Words by Bhikkhu Bodhi is also a valuable introduction to the Buddha's teachings, taking excerpts from the Pali canon and arranging them thematically, along with his expert commentary. The Pali suttas are equivalent to the agamas of the Mahayana canon.

If you liked Bhikkhu Bodhi's commentary on the Eightfold Path, here is Master Sheng-Yen's commentary on the Six Paramitas:
