Edward Conze is the man! He was one of the earliest translators of Buddhism to the West. His book "Buddhist Scriptures" is a wonderful small collection of scriptures from various traditions. His language is varied but consistent, the text has an air of human humour and friendliness. Even if the book is not thick, it carries many details that are useful to get a panoramic view of Buddhism. I want to recommend this book to newcomers and seasoned readers as well.
It's not so difficult to be a good person, but to be genuinely kind takes courage because it can be downright dangerous.
