"Om Syi Dan Dwo Bwo Da La"

Post by jonaz108 »

Namaste,

My name is John and I am new in this forum,
I am not a initiated buddhist, although I accept
Lord Buddha as being the Supreme Lord, God.
I have made a vow to chant the 5 sections of
the Shurangama Mantra, at least 1 time, and
the Great Compassion Mantra of Avalokiteshvara
(long version) 21 times, everyday.

My question is: does anyone know the Sanskrit
version of the Heart Mantra "Om Syi Dan Dwo Bwo Da La",
I mean, like in "Tadyata Om Anale Anale...",
not the Tibetan or Chinese version.

Thank you so much for your service,
Your servant,
John

Hi John,

I think "Om Syi Dan Dwo Bwo Da La" is the core of the Surangama Dharani, sometimes called the Surangama Mantra. Here is a great place to start if you'd like to learn more:

Firstly, two versions of the heart mantra is found online: as per here & here [sorry, no diacritical marks]
Tadyatha: om anale anale visada visada, bandha bandha bandhani bandhani vira vajrapani phat hum bhrum phat svaha
Tadyatha: om anale visade vira vajra dhare bandha bandhane vajra-pane phat hum trum phat svaha
Don't ask me why there are two versions as I am puzzled myself.
What I follow is the second version which accords with what the Chinese Mahayana have in their daily morning chants

Secondly, what you asked in the OP is here: the fifth part of the Dharani, scroll to page 13, top right upper part, do you see 'sitatapatra' with the Chinese? It corresponds with 'syi dan dwo bwo dan la'. In proper pinyin, it's 悉怛多砵怛啰 or xī dá duō bō dá luō. One meaning of sitatapatra is
'white parasol' and there's lots of references on this figure online, depending from which tradition and context.

Thirdly, could you kindly explain this ...although I accept Lord Buddha as being the Supreme Lord, God. ?

:thanks:

My humbles obeisances to all of you,

Thank you so much for the information...

It is funny because I chant the "om anale visade..."
long mantra at home, but, since the beginning I
chant the "om anale anale..." short mantra
at work and in the street, with the counter, in
groups of 108.

What I don't understand its why do they call
"Sitatapatra" the core mantra? Just one word?
Maybe the "secret" gatha is:
OM SARVA TATHAGATA USHNISHA SHITATA PATRI HUM PHAT (?)

As to the Lord Buddha question, it is like that:
I don't believe in concepts like void or emptiness,
or that the jiva can merge in nothingness or in God.
I believe that Buddha is one of many expansions of God,
let's call it "Avatar" with many divine purposes and with
all the divine qualities: transcendental bliss, knowledge and eternity.

Well, that was my humble point of view.
Your servant,
John

This view is more akin to forms of Hinduism. Maybe you might be happier following that path as you'll only find conflict with your views if you continue to follow Buddhism.

Hi Seishin,

Thank you for the advice.
Actually, in every "conflict" I find a little more realization.
I don't rely only in what I think, here or read, but I value
more revelation through the chanting and meditation.
Sometimes, intelect is an obstacle to realization...

Mainly, at the stage most of us are at, not having a good teacher is the main obstacle. Who is your teacher jonaz?

Hi Greg,

I agree absolutely! if we need a teacher to learn simple things as reading, what to say
when it comes to the most complex and transcendental science of the soul!

As I said, I am not a Buddhist. I have a few shiksha (instruction) Gurus in
a different vedic tradition, and right now, I am exploring the beautiful nectarean
ocean of the teachings of Buddhism.
God manifests different aspects of His knowledge in every tradition, so, as a servant
of God, right now I am your (Buddhists) guest!

And a welcome guest you are!

Just one detail: Buddhism is not another (different) vedic tradition.
