DHARAMSHALA: Addressing a conference on neuroscience in Mumbai yesterday, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has urged doctors and scientists to carry out further research on human emotions by using both modern and traditional knowledge and techniques.

“As far as the matter visible we can see and feel is concerned, the modern science has shown marvelous development. On the other hand, the science of mind and emotions can be seen in the ancient Indian tradition of samadi and vipassana. In order to carry these practices you need more awareness about the mind. We need to use these information and techniques to deal with different emotions. Among the top scientists in the West, many are really showing interest to learn about the mind and emotions,” said His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama also called for research work on the relationship between healthy body and mental state.

His Holiness said taking care of our healthy mind is the best way to take care of our healthy body. “We have the potential within ourselves to to keep our mind calm and peaceful. Looking at a problem with a holistic view, that is different angles, can reduces frustrations and maintain our peace of mind. Too much anxiety and stress create some chemical reactions in our brain which results in illness. Calm mind is the best preventive measure.”

His Holiness said the human beings should make more efforts to promote ethics which is not based on religious faiths. “We need moral ethics to have a more happier life and a more peaceful and humane society. Too much corruption and negative emotions out of jealousy, hatred and fear will make the whole society unhealthy. We must find ways and means to moral ethics without touching the religious faiths.”

His Holiness said secular ethics can ensure a more peaceful world. “There was unbelievable advancement in science and technology in the 20th century. But the same century became the century of bloodshed and violence. In the past, the damage is limited. But today, with an immense increase in the destructive power there will be much more suffering. Technology alone cannot guarantee the ushering of healthy, peaceful and compassionate world,” His Holiness said.

''Calm mind is the best preventive measure.''

Even war is driven by a perversion of the desire to be happy. Even those who seek power and engage in killling and cruelty must somehow think it is of benefit to them.

If we understand how to maintain calm, develop equanimity and compassion, our minds could never cause actions which are capable of anger and deliberate harm.
