thangka painting - geometric grid

Post by pink_trike »

Greetings,

Can anyone point me to a site or book that discusses in some depth the symbolic meaning of the precise grids used to construct thangkas? Thanks.

Hi Pink_Trike,

These are the responses I received when I posed your query at another forum:

http://www.tibetanpaintings.com/thangka-painting.htm

You can also go to Dharma Publishing under History of Art nd Culture - the staff wrote a small book and there is a larger work by Tarthang Tulku. (they are not crazy about hyperlinks to their site - sorry)
Kindly,
Laura :)

"At last, this wonderful 'how to' book has been reprinted. Every possible aspect is covered, firstly the history of Tibetan art, its place in Tibetan culture, the teachers, and the artists, before we get to the basics, from preparing the painting surface to the measurements, the symbols, the borders--and the conservation. So much in one book that every aspiring artist will want."—Mandala Magazine
